We all know the story by now, after being caught with 2 illegal substances in his body, and then trying to put the blame off on the NSAC, Chael Sonnen has accepted responsibity and has decided to call it quits from MMA.
Or has he?
I was reading through the comments on the Sonnen retires story and 'Wolf Tickets' brought up a point I hadn't even noticed when I first read the story, something that made me wonder if Chael is trying to pull the wool over ours eyes again. Before I say what it was, let me first remind you that Sonnen is a smart guy, someone who thinks out what he's going to say beforehand (usually). I don't know how many times I've heard him say something like "that's not what I said" and then go on to explain his wording or what he meant.
So anyway, when Sonnen said he was retiring this is the way he phrased it "I want to officially announce my retirement from competitive mixed martial arts". The word 'competitive' sticks out to me, why say it that way? Especially why say it that way when he probably thought out carefully how he was going to announce his retirement.
I wonder if his plan is to take a break, and when things settle down and if he can get to a point where he knows he can pass a test, then return. If he's booked in a fight with Wanderlei and is asked about saying he was retired, instead of saying the same old 'I just couldn't stay away', he could spin it differently and say 'I didn't retire from MMA, go back and read my words, I said I retired from competitive MMA. This fight against Wanderlei is not going to be competitive'.
