With it's first PPV out of the way, Bellator has been in the news and in the thoughts of fans of MMA. There has been a fair deal of dissenting opinions about the promotion in the last few weeks, so I wished to pose a question to the rest of the community here on MMAFighting.
Is it wrong to like Bellator as a fan of MMA? Granted, they aren't quite the promotion that Strikeforce was before them. But they still have a few positives going for them. I'd liken it to braving the unknown watching a Bellator card, never sure if some new fighter will show up on your radar and catch your attention. I've gained quite a few new fighters I like to keep track of thanks to what Bellator has had to offer. It is however a promotion that is top and bottom heavy, a large part of it's appeal comes from it's highest and lower weight classes, with room to grow in the center.
Still, the first event I had watched enticed me to watch more, or atleast follow results. I like the fact that the tournament format gives us the chance to see fighters we normally wouldn't see spotlighted introduced to us. The fact that they often introduce the fighter by giving them the chance to speak outside the cage. Granted the tournament format has been abused a bit (I'm looking at you 4 man light-heavyweight tournament), but it isn't lacking in entertainment value. I'd wager to say if Bellator filled out the roster, and worked out some kinks in production, there would be times I would value watching them over paying to see a UFC card. Bellator is still growing, it's in it's infancy as far as large scale promotions go, and it's still chugging along. And as long as it tries, I'm willing to give it a chance.
