UFC 169 results: Alistair Overeem scores one-sided win over Frank Mir

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

In each of his two previous fights, Alistair Overeem fought at a frenetic pace, right up until the point he was knocked out.

Faced with a UFC 169 bout with Frank Mir in which it was believed the loser would be done with the company, the former Strikeforce champ knew he needed a change of approach.

Overeem went to Thailand to work on his cardio and it showed, as Overeem dominated the former UFC champ for three straight rounds at Newark's Prudential Center. All three judges scored the bout 30-27.

The Blackzilian showed off his typical first-round power in a dominant round, landing vicious knees in the clinch. When they hit the mat, Overeem pinned Mir's arm behind his head and landed a series of rights.

In the second, Mir had his sole highlight of the fight, as he briefly got Overeem into a guillotine choke. But Overeem escaped, and Mir found himself on the wrong end of several elbows.

Early in the this, Mir pulled guard, but couldn't do much of anything with it. By the time they were stood up with a minute left, Mir's face was a bloody mess. Overeem (37-13, 1 no-contest) popped Mir a couple times, but chose not to go for the finish.

"I had to play it a little bit safe, usually I go for the knockout, but this time I decided to keep some gas in the tank and go for the W," said Overeem, who snapped a two-fight losing streak.

He also sent a message to Brock Lesnar.

"I heard there's word that Brock Lesnar is about to come back to the UFC. Well I'll be here waiting for him," Overeem said.

Mir (16-9) dropped his fourth consecutive fight.
