With a better alternative unable to be reached, Travis Browne and Fabricio Werdum's upcoming network clash has been upgraded to the main event of UFC on FOX 11, which is expected to take place on April 19, 2014.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the news while speaking to reporters in New York on Thursday.
Browne vs. Werdum was initially announced in mid-January, although at the time a headlining bout for the event had yet to be determined. The heavyweight tilt is expected to serve as a No. 1 contender fight, with the winner going on to meet UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who is currently recovering from shoulder surgery.
Browne (16-1-1), the UFC's No. 3 ranked heavyweight, bounced back from the first professional loss of his career to rip through a ferocious 2013 campaign, scoring first-round knockouts of Gabriel Gonzaga, Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett in succession. All three wins earned Browne ‘Knockout of the Night' bonuses.
Werdum (17-5-1), the UFC's No. 2 ranked heavyweight, fought just once in 2013, coaxing a verbal submission from Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira with a second-round armbar last June. The win punctuated a three-fight win streak, which also included victories over Roy Nelson and Mike Russow.
