"I actually dropped some weight … I wanted improved cardio, so obviously you want to lose some weight. That actually goes automatic. A lot more cardio and you automatically lose a lot of weight. We just wanted [my cardio] to be better."
For years, when asked about his freakish, hulking physique Overeem would jokingly refer to his horsemeat diet. However unintentional that euphemism was, most observers in the MMA community took it to translate to a steady regimen of performance enhancers. So what are we to make of Overeem’s latest comment that he was actively trying to shed weight in hopes of improving his cardio?
My first thought is that it must be tough for even Overeem to believe what he says these days. He fails a drug test in April 2012 with an absurd 14-to-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone rate, way over the 6-to-1 allowable threshold. He then gets knocked out by Bigfoot Silva and Travis Browne, in each appearance showing a, shall we say, less chiseled build... and now we’re supposed to believe that he wants to drop weight? I do believe that his cardio has failed him recently, and improving that can only help. But it must be embarrassing for him to give an interview and say that he actively wants a smaller build with better cardio, when everyone knows that simply translates to: they won’t let me eat horsemeat anymore.
