UFC on FOX 10 Live Blog: Darren Elkins vs. Jeremy Stephens

Darren Elkins and Jeremy Stephens will kick off the UFC on FOX 10 main card. - Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

This is the UFC on FOX 10 live blog for Darren Elkins vs. Jeremy Stephens, a featherweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the United Center in Chicago.

Elkins, who has won four of his past five fights, will face Stephens, who is 2-0 since he dropped to featherweight, on the main card.

Round 1: Big John McCarthy is the referee. Stephens throws an errant right off the bat, and Elkins staying the outside. He comes in with a punch to the thigh, also errant, and then a half-serious double-leg that he let's go of. Stephens plants in the middle and, with poise, throws another big shot that misses. Stephens content to counter, but right now not landing. Elkins slipped and now Stephens jumps into his guard. Stephens trying to advance the position, into half guard, but Elkins bounces back up. Back to the center. Stephens calmly throws a combination, and this time sneaks a cross through that catches Elkins. He's not hurt, though. Stephens trying to climb Elkins and land a high knee, but ends up just balancing himself on his thigh. They tie-up along the fence, then Stephens wheels back to the middle. Elkins initiates an exchange, and once again takes the brunt of it. Big uppercut from Stephens lands flush. Elkins, hard-headed as always, walks right through it. Stephens throwing bombs with gusto, trying to end this thing quickly. So far Elkins -- though eating a few -- getting out of the way enough. A little blood on Elkins forehead. That's it for the firs round. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Jeremy Stephens, 10-9.

Round 2: Elkins' corner told him between rounds that he took Stephens' best punch, and now it's his turn. Here we go. Elkins stands right in there and throws big shots, and once again gets caught with a counter in the middle of the combo. Stephens tries a head kick, but Elkins spins out. Now Elkins sells out for a double leg, but he only catches Stephens' toe nails, as the veteran coolly walks away. Back to center. Elkins, this time using the cage as an ally, trying to dump Stephens on his back, but Stephens s up for it, and thwarts the attempt. Frustration for Elkins, just too strong for Elkins. Another exchange in the middle of the cage, but Elkins keeping a safe distance and Stephens whiffing. Solid kick from Stephens lands. Big overhand right by Elkins grazes Stephens, but he shrugs it off. Elkins face bloodying as we go on. Big uppercut from Stephens crashes home, and again as Elkins again slipped. Superman punch to headkick by Elkins, and that time he scored on it, but Stephens unaffected. Stephens switching from orthodox to southpaw, confusing Elkins. Lunging jab by Stephens lands, and then a kick. Right at the end of the second round, Stephens with blistering right cross that sent the off-balance Elkins reeling. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Stephens, 10-9 (20-18 overall).

Round 3: Elkins, as he's done all fight, waving that left jab out there, trying to keep his range. A front kick doesn't land, but Stephens grabs a leg and spins Elkins down. But, now Elkins has a guillotine attempt. He squeezes trying to end it, and the tension is there for a second, but Stephens spins out. Nothing doing. They are back up. Now it's Stephens in the middle of the cage, while Elkins circles. Stephens tries for a kick and Elkins grabs his leg and spins him to the ground. Stephens bounces right back up. Good exchange in the middle, both guys cracking each other in the exchange, Elkins looks to have stung Stephens a little more. Stephens sets and throws a couple of all-or-nothing overhand rights that both come up empty. Elkins tries for take down, and is thwarted yet again (now 0-11). Stephens wades in and initiates a leather trade, and crashes a left hook into Elkins while eating a right. Same thing happens again. The punches are now more isolated for both guys as the fight wears on them. Stephens looked like he got hurt on his left there for a second, and now Elkins trying for a choke. He's spinning trying to get mount and shifting his pressure, but the final bell rings just as it was getting interesting. Good rally there by Elkins, but too little too late. Elkins too strong throughout. MMA Fighting scores R3 for Stephens, 10-9 (overall 30-27 for Stephens).
