Though the UFC has yet to make it official, it looks like Jake Ellenberger and Tarec Saffiedine will try it again. Ellenberger announced on his Twitter page that he will meet Saffiedine -- whom he was supposed to face at UFC Fight Night 34 in Singapore on Jan. 4 before a pulled hamstring sidelined him -- at UFC 172.
Ellenberger confirmed to MMA Fighting that the fighters have verbally agreed to meet in Baltimore on April 26.
UFC 172 will be headlined by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira at the Baltimore Arena. Jones will be looking to extend his UFC record by defending his 205-pound belt a sixth time.
Though Ellenberger was forced to miss the UFC’s maiden voyage to Singapore, Saffiedine made the most of his UFC debut against Ellenberger’s replacement, Hyun Gyu Lim. Saffiedine won a unanimous decision against the massive welterweight Lim, but squandered his chances to finish the fight in the third and fourth rounds, allowing the Korean to provide some dramatic moments late.
That fight was the first to be held exclusively on Zuffa’s recently launched online platform, UFC Fight Pass.
Ellenberger had won eight of nine fights before a loss against Rory MacDonald set him back at UFC on FOX 8 in July 2013. Saffiedine, the reigning welterweight champion in Strikeforce at the time of the UFC/Strikeforce merger, will look to make it two in a row in the Octagon.
