Morning Report: B.J. Penn endorses Anderson Silva's goal to return to fighting

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Suffice it to say former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva could use all the well wishes he can get at the moment. Who better to have in your corner than former two-division champ B.J. Penn?

"I wish you were here in [Brazil] with us, Anderson," said Penn, taking a breather while training alongside UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and interim bantamweight champ Renan Barão. "I just want to say, a lot of people [are] talking. I just want to tell for you, whatever you decide, I support you. You're the best. You set the records. Obrigado. I'll see you when I come back home to the United States. Stay strong, Anderson."

Admittedly, Penn's gesture is certainly nothing earth-shattering, but it's notable to have someone of his stature endorse Silva's possible return to fighting. After Silva's gruesome leg injury suffered last month at UFC 168, his own family was pleading for him to leave competition behind. Regardless, Silva seems intent on making a comeback, even if not immediately to MMA.

Penn, himself, even settled into a brief retirement following his 2011 loss to Nick Diaz before returning to face Rory MacDonald in Dec. 2012. With Silva and Penn each 0-2 in their last bouts, these guys need to stick together.

FANPOST OF THE DAY

Today's Fanpost of the Day comes viagogoplatabeast.

MMA Promotion: A World Series of Unfortunate Events

The UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, Invicta, Bellator, OneFC, Bamma, CWFC, WSOF. Each a facade, a thick veil placed over a cage in order to gain as many viewers as possible for the callow sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Each with their own triumphs, flaws, support, opposition, characters and history. All have contributed to the sport. All in positive and negative ways. Some have risen to the top of the pool while others have fallen victim to an alpha predator. A company lead by businessmen with the timing and efficiency of merciless sharks.

Of the companies remaining who may lay claim to the largest portions of the market share pie, just one seems still to be experiencing teething problems unbecoming of a promotion deserving inclusion in the list above. Creases one would simply scoff at the thought that a majour sports network could fail to iron out. That network is NBC Sports and it's featured promotion is the World Series of Fighting.
