Morning Report: 'Broke' Donald Cerrone considered retirement prior to win over Evan Dunham

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Although he admits to not knowing much about his upcoming opponent in Adriano Martins, there was no hesitation when he was offered up to Donald Cerrone by the UFC's chief matchmaker, Joe Silva.

"I don't give a s**t either way," says Cerrone. "Whether I want it or don't want it. I texted Joe after my fight saying I want another fight ASAP. He said, 'How does Jan. 25 work?' I said, 'Great!' He didn't even give me an opponent's name. Then a couple days later he texted me, I said, 'Yea, whoever. I don't give a s**t.' Don't matter. We're going for six [fights] this year. I like money.

"What really happened is I spent all my money and now I'm broke. Now I've only got one choice and that's to fight."

Eager to put an end to an inconsistent past few years, Cerrone says he's put the rocky stretch behind him.

"I got real comfortable financially, kinda let off everything. I lost my fire. I was training and going through the motions," says Cerrone. "With the last fight with Dunham, I was really considering retiring had I not been able to pull the trigger."

So was a shift from fiscal solvency to a Spartan lifestyle intentional? Not really.

"No, I'm just out of control. It's hard to have money in the bank and want something and then get it. I just f***ing buy it. I have no idea what 'saving money' is. It has nothing to do with wanting to go broke. I wish I had millions in the bank. I'd never go broke. Lets get that belt and get millions in the bank."

Cerrone faces Martins Jan. 25 at UFC on Fox 10.

Cerrone's segment begins at 48:00.

The epitome of hypocrisy: PEDs in Mixed Martial Arts

I , like many others, fell in love with this sport years ago. It wasn't just the brutality, gore or violent nature of the sport, although, I believe any fan who states that doesn't affect their opinion of it is a liar. No, to me it had more to do with its genealogy. Its raw, primeval yet somehow harmonious nature. One versus one. My body against yours.

It is as natural as our quest for knowledge. Find me a man or woman who completed puberty without at least the threat of physical violence. You can't. It's impossible. Fighting is human. It cannot be denied regardless of laws, political agendas, evolution or idealized views of a utopian future. Fighting will ALWAYS have value to our species.
