UFC Fight Night 35 results: Luke Rockhold makes short work of Costas Philippou

Scott Olmos-US PRESSWIRE

Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was looking to make a statement in his first fight back after a memorable knockout loss to Vitor Belfort.

It didn't take long for him to do so Wednesday night.

Rockhold used vicious body kicks to score a first-round knockout of Costas Phillipou in the main event of UFC Fight Night 35 at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia.

After the fight, Rockhold made clear what's on his agenda.

"I'm not here to be good, I want to be great," said the American Kickboxing Academy Fighter. "I want my rematch with Vitor, and I would like it here in the states. I will go through anyone to get it, especially Michael Bisping, it wold be nice."

Philippou (12-4, 1 NC), who has lost two straight fights since leaving Ray Longo's camp, simply looked overmatched from the start. One kick landed directly on the liver and a second one was an absolute bullseye, causing him to crumble to the mat. Herb Dean waved off the fight at 2:31.

"I love that liver kick, you have to set it up, go high and go low. I got a lot of power in my kicks. ... I waited on my opportunities, caught him with a hook and finished him with my kicks."

Rockhold improved to 11-2 on his career. Of the nine fights Rockhold won via finish, all have come in the first round.
