So the UFC interim bantamweight champion came out flying in the second round at Air Canada Centre. Barao landed a spinning back kick to the face, then landed a series of left hand hands to finish the fight. Yves Levigne stopped the bout at 35 seconds of the second round.
"I don't practice that very often in my camp, because I can hurt people," said Barao through an interpreter. "But in my fights I always try it, and it worked this time."
It was Barao's second successful defense of the interim bout. This week, UFC president Dana White indicated that Barao would lose the interim tag if champion Dominick Cruz, who has been out for two years, cannot return soon.
Barao improved to 31-1 (1 NC). Wineland, a former WEC champion, had a two-fight win streak snapped.
"I'm just waiting for Dominick Cruz now," Barao said.
