Mike Wilkinson came into his UFC debut unbeaten, but less than two minutes later, his streak was over and he lay across the canvas, unconscious. It was that fast and that decisive for Brazilian favorite Rony Jason, who put Wilkinson out with a triangle choke at 1:24 of the first round.
Wilkinson had taken the fight to the ground of his own volition, ducking under a hook to put Jason on his back. Bad move. Jason quickly cleared Wilkinson's left wrist and passed it through his legs, then locked in the choke, adding a couple of elbows before the referee stepped in, realizing Wilkinson had gone unconscious.
"He's a very tough guy," Jason told the Ginásio Paulo Sarasate crowd in Fortaleza, Brazil after his UFC on FUEL 10 win. "I knew I'd only have one opportunity, so the minute I got that opportunity, I had to hold on to it."
Jason, who is from Cerea, the state hosting the event, dedicated the win to his grandfather, who recently passed away.
It was the eighth straight win for Jason, who is now 13-3 overall, and 3-0 in the UFC.
Wilkinson fell to 8-1.
