Pat Healy had one of the most feed good moments this year. The former Strikeforce fighter easily found a new home in the UFC with his fight against Jim Miller in an almost 14 min war before Healy got the submission on Miller. He had the fans behind him and most important he had caught the attention of Dan White, earning him a cool $130k in bonuses only to have it taken away from him before he can even cash the check. Was he on steroids? Nope, he got busted for having THC in his system, most commonly known as marijuana. Smoking took all that away.
Now I know smoking Marijuana is legal in a few states, most notably, California where the a certain Diaz brother has lost almost 18 months of his career due to smoking. Regardless if it helps with stress, isn't TRT when it comes to performance enhancing but the fact remains that its 100% illegal in fights. Just because its natural or its has stress relief properties, the Athletic Commission and Dana White won't care. You'll get suspended and fined, and in Healy's case, lose more more than 80% of your earnings.
A lot of these fighters getting fined for smoking a joint is getting out of hand. I'm afraid that the UFC will take even stricter punishments in the future to show the fighters that they take it seriously even if its a 1st Offense. Instead of complaining after you're suspended on why you needed or man up to it without complaining in the case of Healy. Make a case for weed to be legal, because until that happens are you are going to do is lose wins, money, possible titles shots, or even worse, your UFC career in the case of Matt Riddle.
So my plea to all the current UFC fighters, is to not smoke at all. You never know when the UFC needs you to fill in a few weeks out from a fight and if you have been smoking you will get punished just like someone else with an 8 or 12 week camp. Make a logical case with other fighters and get your right to smoke. But until then, stay away from it for your own well career.
