UFC on FOX 7 results: Matt Brown smashes Jordan Mein

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

The mid-career resurgence of Matt Brown continues.

The UFC veteran, who was once on the verge of losing his job after losses in four of five fights, added another memorable victory to his current streak, smashing the highly regarded prospect Jordan Mein at UFC on FOX 7.

Brown, who was considered a sizable underdog in the bout, made the fight to his own liking with crushing pressure from the opening bell. That gave the action a frantic pace.

Both fighters had their moments in a wild first round. Brown spent the whole time coming forward, at one point taunting Mein to meet him halfway. Mein accepted the challenge on many occasions, leading to violent exchanges that looked something like rams clashing horns.

Minutes into the bout, Brown was already cut on the left eyebrow, but he seemed very content with the way it was playing out, finding the clinch where he could and looking to bully his 23-year-old opponent.

Mein (27-9) actually had the first round's most powerful strike when he walloped Brown with a knee to the body. That dropped Brown to a knee, and Mein ended up putting him on the mat, but he couldn't finish in what would be his best opportunity. Brown hurt him late in the round, and when the second started, Brown seemed completely recovered while Mein -- who took the fight on short notice with just five weeks between bouts -- looked fatigued.

Brown charged forward again, and changed the fight's complexion with a thudding knee to the face. Mein was soon grounded and Brown hit him with strikes and elbows until ref John McCarthy peeled him off. The time of the TKO was 60 seconds into the second round.

On the strength of his fifth straight win, Brown is now 17-11.
