Big-money signee Hector Lombard is now 1-2 in the octagon.
The former Bellator middleweight champion fell again on Saturday in Saitama, Japan, losing a decision to Yushin Okami at UFC on FUEL 8. Okami won a split-decision by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.
At least this time Lombard went out looking for the finish. After a lackluster opening two rounds that saw him taken down repeatedly, Lombard was able to dominate the third after rocking Okami early with a powerful left cross. Lombard aggressively stalked him around the cage and landed a few strikes. Okami decided to change the fight's location by flopping to his back. Lombard looked to unload with strikes, but Okami was able to deflect most of the major ones.
Back to their feet, Okami was able to survive until the final bell.
Okami scored three takedowns over the first two rounds, and did surprisingly well on his feet as well, keeping Lombard on the end of his jab for long stretches of action.
In the second, he was able to advance all the way to full mount.
Lombard, who lost to Tim Boetsch last July before knocking out Rousimar Palhares in December, didn't go quietly, but his late effort wasn't enough to convince the judges he'd done enough.
Lombard is now 32-4-1 with 1 no contest while Okami captured his third straight, making him 29-7.
