People go on and on about TUF and how bad it is. In fact the MMA "experts" often say publicly they don't watch or simply watch the fight and none of the other parts of the show. Is this a clue that something is broken? Frankly I've watched all the shows and all the episodes up until now. Fights every week? Bring it on. I have the cure for what's broken with TUF because there is a glaring problem in my opinion right now with the show.
A large flaw in TUF right now is that the cast doesn't often see the light of day after the show. A big deal? How about this. Why should I care about the show or the cast if the UFC decides to cut 90% of them at the end? Essentially I just invested in these fighters who won't be in the UFC anytime soon. To be honest, the past season was a tipping point for me. If they are casting the show that bad, then that need to be fix number one. Perhaps it's simply that there isn't the talent out there any more. If that's the case, then it's a very difficult fix indeed.
So ultimately the UFC needs to bring more of the cast into the mix. If they care about the show and the fans watching it, then it should be obvious. Do you want to watch a show on TV and see new characters all the time? No. You want to see these fighters in real UFC events and watch their progress. If you spend hours watching the show, getting to know these people and then they aren't anywhere to be seen at the conclusion of the show? I can tell you it makes the first few episodes really really pointless. So we meet their family and make a connection, yet 70% or a vast majority of them never are to be seen again in the UFC. Makes no sense and honestly in the future I may just skip through the footage with families etc during the fights to get in the house.
More than anything if I was an executive at another MMA organization I would be all over the cast offs. Afterall, the UFC put them on TV, you know who they are, and it's far more interesting watching a fighter you know rather than a fighter you don't know. I would be plucking these fighters up for sure. That said, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if there is some sort of restriction about signing elsewhere right after the end of a TUF season.
Does this make sense or do you not mind watching and learning about various fighters even though the vast vast majority lately don't get signed into the UFC after the show ends? I can tell you it's driving me crazy now.
