I want to keep this short and sweet. Regardless that Tito was injured and Rampage was moved to the next card, they had these two fighters as the main event of what was to be Bellator's first foray into the PPV realm. We know how that played out.
The point I am looking at is that three title fights were relegated to co-main event and lower status in the cards bout order. I believe this is really a shame as they all carried real weight in their divisions and after the results last night, proved they should have been ordered as such.
Bellator 108 has Rampage facing Beltran, and again, it is the main event of the night. I can see how you would want the #13 LHW fighter carrying a card, especially being a former world champion, fighting another former UFC fighter. Yet, again, a title fight is sitting in the co-main event slot.
For myself, this is a very bad move by Bellator.
This is the type of read between the lines releases that people love to have thrown at them. To me at least, this action says, we highly value Rampage and believe in him as a star power source for viewers. Our Middleweight champion, nor his challenger, does not have enough star appeal for us to let them headline a show for our Middleweight title.
I can not imagine what Shlemenko or Marshall are feeling, or what the six others from lasts nights Bellator title fights were thinking when it was Tito against Rampage for the Main Event.
I hope they correct this very soon. It is downplaying their own champions belts and their abilities by leaving their title fights off of main event and giving it to former UFC fighters with higher profiles just to obtain viewership and ease the promotional responsibilities.
Seems to me like the sting of losing the PPV and main event from Tito's injury didn't hurt enough to teach them a lesson they obviously need. It may be just a matter of time before it happens again and turns out much worse for them. Three title fights on one card will not always be there to hold up a failed attempt at promotional manipulation.
So I am curious to poll this and I will repost later on the results.
Should Bellator use high profile fighters it obtains as their future main events while leaving their title fights as co-main events?
