Its hard to imagine a fighter like Shane Carwin at the age of 38 who has had so many different injuries in his career wouldn't just call it quits. Carwin has only fought twice since early 2010 and both were losses with one of them being a severe beating by Dos Santos where Carwin took a 3 round beating that was so horrific alot of fans stated online they literaly had a hard time watching as there was chunks of skin or meat hanging from around Carwins eyes. I recently looked back at some of the worst ( beatings) in UFC history and I could really only find one other fight where a fighter took as much or more punishment than Carwin took at the hands of JDS and that was GSP's legendary beatdown of Jon Fitch. Even though I'm probably the very least impressed fan of Jon Fitch's abilities and fighting (OR LACK OF) style I was impressed at the amount of damage he was able to absorb in that title fight with GSP but was it worth it is where i don't think Fitch was very smart. Since that fight Fitch has been injured on and off and out for close to a year on several different occasions and reason I bring this up is before that GSP fight Fitch was one of the most durable ironman/bluecollar type figters UFC had and now he is constantly having to back out of fights. (Now one also wonders if that is more to get out of bad matchups or injury???) So here's where I believe this is a good indication why i think Carwin should retire in comparison to the similair beatings taken by him and Fitch. Fitch was 29 yrs old when he took that beating and hasn't been same fighter since and now at 35 he has been Ko'd real bad recently and its obvious his career is winding down. Now with Carwin his worst beating of his life took place at 36 years old a little less than 2 years ago and he can't make it through a training camp without being injured. I do wonder how much of Carwin backing out of fight with Nelson and ruining his gig on Ultimate fighter may have had more to do with Carwin not wanting to submit to VADA PED testing and all the backlash that came about and which dredged up all the bad publicity of Carwin being named in that big Federal DEA steroids investigation a few years ago where Carwin had promised through his attorney to make a statement regarding his involment at which time he decided to just blow everyone off and tell world he is bigger than Lance Armstrong and more important to where he doesn't have to address anyone.
