Strikeforce Live Blog: Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring


This is the Strikeforce live blog for Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring, a heavyweight bout during Saturday night's Marquardt vs. Saffiedine event at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Cormier, who has never lost in his MMA career (10-0), will face Staring, who is making his Strikeforce debut, on the main card.

Round 1: Big John McCarthy is our referee. McCarthy quickly warns Staring to close his outstretched hand to avoid any eyepokes. Cormier deftly tosses out a head kick. Staring ties up and promptly gets tossed to the canvas. Cormier lands in side control, smothering his opponent. Cormier pins Staring's right arm and briefly advances into a crucifix, but Staring scrambles back to his feet. Cormier misses with a wild high kick. Huge combination rocks Staring! Cormier locks up and throws Staring to the mat, landing once again in side control. Cormier unleashes a series of short elbows to Staring's jaw. Staring scrambles back to his feet, and McCarthy briefly stops the action to give Staring his lost mouthpiece. Cormier pressures Staring against the cage and slowly drags him down, landing in mount. Cormier postures up and starts dropping short elbows and punches. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cormier.

Round 2: Staring wades forward with a combination. Cormier ties up and throws a few knees before releasing. Big one-two for Cormier, who capitalizes by bulldozing Staring to the canvas. Cormier advances to side control, then takes Staring's back. Staring rolls. Cormier starts raining down blows from half guard. More hammerfists. Cormier is dominating this fight. Cormier advances to mount. Staring gives up his back again. Cormier unloads another flurry and this one could be over soon. Staring just covering up in a fetal position. That's it, McCarthy mercifully steps in.
