Strikeforce Results: Anthony Smith Submits Lumumba Sayers

Jayne Kamin-Oncea, US PRESSWIRE

Saturday night was part-business and part-personal for Anthony Smith, and the evening ended as he hoped, in victory.

Smith bloodied Lumumba Sayers up and then locked in a fight-ending triangle, causing a stoppage due to tapout at 3:52 of the first round of their Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman fight.

Smith showed a slick ground game several times during the brief fight, reversing disadvantageous positions with potential submission holds. He later bloodied Sayers with an elbow.

The end came when Smith slipped upon throwing a strike. He couldn't regain his footing and instead fell backwards.

Sayers tried to capitalize on the position by moving into his guard, but Smith quickly worked from his back to gain wrist control, and soon wrapped up Sayers in a triangle.

"That's my trademark," he said after winning.

It was the third straight win for Smith, who improved to 17-8. Sayers fell to 6-3, snapping a two-fight win streak.

The duo had shared some back-and-forth prior to the bout based upon their previous personal experiences, but it was Smith who walked out with bragging rights.
