Nick Diaz Tests Positive for Marijuana

The UFC welterweight and Cesar Gracie protege has tested positive for marijuana metabolites the second time in his mixed martial arts career and now faces an uncertain future.

Feb 9, 2012 - The Nevada Athletic Commission has confirmed that Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana at UFC 143 and will face disciplinary action, almost certainly canceling his planned rematch with Carlos Condit and throwing his future into question.

"Mr. Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites. A complaint for disciplinary action against Mr. Diaz has been filed," Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer wrote in a statement distributed to the media.

After losing to Condit by unanimous decision, Diaz was expected to get a rematch before it became clear that there was an issue with Diaz's drug test. Now Diaz is likely to be suspended at least six months, and possibly longer because he's a repeat offender. Diaz was also busted for marijuana after his upset submission victory over Takanori Gomi in Pride, and that result was subsequently changed to a no contest.

Diaz's future is in doubt not only because the Commission may suspend him, but also because the UFC may decide he's more trouble than he's worth. UFC President Dana White has repeatedly lamented Diaz's refusal to "play the game," and if Diaz can't pass a drug test at the biggest fight of his career, the UFC may not trust him to participate in big fights going forward. There's also the matter of Diaz's post-fight comments, when he said he doesn't know if he even wants to fight anymore.

It's also unclear what will happen with Condit, who was declared the interim welterweight champion for his victory over Diaz. At the moment it appears likely that Condit will sit out until Georges St. Pierre has sufficiently recovered from knee surgery and can return to the Octagon, which is tentatively planned for November.

no actually

diaz has a very low body fat percentage so he has been to known to stop 10 days b4 the fight and pass the test hes been doing it for a wile,(joe rogan has a video about it with joey daiz they talk about how he tokes wile on conference calls) but obviously all that media shit he had to do the 2 days b4 the fight might have put him over the edge prolly blazed like 7 days b4 fight and couldnt get it all out. or he just thought he was good and he wasnt.

fact

he didn’t smoke. the tests are rigged. they’re pist b/c he didn’t want rematch or behave the way they want. weed is nothing and the proof is in sonnen and mardquardt. sonnen a two-time cheat gets the champ now and mardquardt gets banished. overeem and brock don’t test positive, three out of the four hall of famers are users and diaz using a non ped is in trouble. shut up hypocrites!

by One Bad on Feb 9, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Lol...

Are you mad? I guess every test is legit but Diaz was rigged?Makes sense I mean he didn’t want a rematch right? Why the hell would a guy running around screaming and crying that he was robbed NOT want a rematch?

Be realistic please he tested positive for an illegal substance, the argument isn’t if it’s worse than tobacco or alcohol. Sonnen was suspended, he had two fights TWO FIGHTS before getting his rematch. Diaz was getting it right away, it’s his fault that he screwed up not the UFCs not the Athletic Commissions.

So he didn’t smoke and it’s rigged, or weed is nothing and a non PED? You can’t even figure out what you’re trying to say here.

Nevada is a medical state bro

by Rob2507 on Feb 9, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

matters not if its legal for use....

He stills falls under the laws of the states. No matter what if you have a “recommendation” for medical marijuana, your boss can fire you for a hot piss test. Its not quite at the level that Vicodin is at. You would need to state that before a urine test with your work and then your ass is covered. Since marijunana really isn’t prescribed by doctors, medical marijuana patients are not covered under the same laws. This is why even Dutch fighters, as another person who says its “legal” will not be covered by the laws of their home country. Once the govt can patent marijuana and learn how to dose it, then people can get prescribed the plant and maybe not get popped on piss tests. The bad thing is for most people the THC will stay in your system for long periods of time.

by ChrisOB on Feb 9, 2012 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

The marijuana laws in this country are rediculous, they’re not even really worth debating because they are a disgrace to politics as a whole

by Rob2507 on Feb 9, 2012 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure that even in the states where it’s legal that it’s still considered a banned substance by athletic commissions.

Do you think fighters should have painkillers in their system? This is a yes or no question.

Do you understand the importance of pain in combat sports? Again, yes or no?

you are wrong

I am a family doctor in Denver. While I agree with the fact that Diaz broke the rules and should be disciplined because he knew them coming in, there is no evidence that cannabis would help a fighter play through pain. Generally, it is used for a few indications: glaucoma, CHRONIC pain, anxiety, and as a appetite stimulant for the chronically ill. I do not prescribe it, but Colorado is a medical marijuana state and I have several patients on it for various chronic conditions. Having been in martial arts for a long time and an avid mma fan, I have had some opportunity to follow Diaz but not a lot as my son and I started following mma on cable tv with the WEC. I admire his toughness and volume-punching abilities, but he is clearly troubled. It is possible that he is masking severe anxiety, a personality disorder or bipolar disorder with his mmj use. Have I just missed some news? Does he have a history of any of these problems? And why isn’t his team and brother trying to help him not do this leading up to a fight so he doesn’t get in trouble?

This is bullshit

Diaz has his medical license and marijuana doesn’t enhance anybody’s performance whatsoever… However, a thought just dawned on me though and I’d like to hear other people’s opinions. What if Nick failed this drug test on purpose as a way to get away from the sport for awhile but still keep his job? Sounds like something Nick would do

by Rob2507 on Feb 9, 2012 5:30 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Whether it affects performance or not….Doesn’t matter. He CANT SMOKE WEED before the fight.

If he did it to try an leave the sport, then he might have some mental issues.

Failed drug test on purpose… As a way to get away from the sport for a while… But still keep his job.

I suggest you read that repeatedly until you understand how ridiculous it is…

Let me help you out;
Sabotaging your test results is hardly a way to ensure job security while obtaining some much-needed time off. I’m relatively sure that Jon Jones requested some time off (without consuming illegal substances), and I can assure you that he is still employed by Zuffa.

The only thing that’s “bullshit” here is the fact that Nick has made the SAME mistake TWO times in his career… Once, it cost him a VERY impressive win. Now, it has cost him any shot he had at having people take him seriously.

I just think this kind of thing the root of the problem… People make excuses for Nick simply “because he is Nick”… Life doesn’t work that way! The absolute best thing anyone could do for him would be to tell it like it is; you can’t go around expecting the world to make exceptions for you.

Honestly, I’m only this worked up about it because I actually really like the guy! I just wish someone would give him a good shake and knock some sense into him.

you are right as rain

nick very obviously suffers from anxiety. I love to get a glimps into the life of these amazing fighters but I feel all the media attention especially in the last weeks before a fight is detrimental to their training, sleep, and over all health. I believe all the attention got to him and in my opinion caused him to medicate himself in a safe natural way rather than taking hand full of pills.
The commission needs to do the research. Other PEDs are not legal because of there adverse effects on the body, steroids are dangerous and a fighter shouldn’t have to take them just to keep up. Imagine there was a “drug” out there that strengthens bones making them stronger than natural ones and less susceptible to breaking. That’s right there is one its called milk some fighters decide to utilize it others don’t care for its adverse effects and take a calcium supplement. Which Inarguably enhances performance and I believe marijauna falls under the same catagory and to list it with things like steroids is simply ignorant .
imagine a fighter in the position of Nick takes the advise of a doctor and medicates himself with a drug like xanax or riddlin and never left the couch that is a serious disservise to the sport

by mullet2.0 on Feb 10, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

Ya I really like him too!

He’s just a troubled guy, everyone can tell, people dismiss him as this asshole who doesn’t care what people think but I’m positive he’s really depressed, depression usually comes with social anxiety, which he clearly has too. I just wanna see Nick truly happy, the only time I’ve ever seen a real smile on that guy’s face is in that 2011 mma photos video that Esther Lin put up at the end of last year. I hope he can help some help with his depression

by Rob2507 on Feb 9, 2012 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

good point

I agree with your basic assumptions, but if he has depression it is likely bipolar depression. Very few people with a unipolar depression would have the mental energy and physical ability to push their bodies the way Nick does. But your general point is well-taken. In the pre-fight interviews he seems quite scattered and in a strange way, emotionally fragile. Which is why fighting and staying to himself in a very small “family” of people at the gym probably makes him feel safe. It’s weird. Pro athletes have all the same attributes as the rest of us. My patients who are athletes have been happy, well-adjusted people like Condit appears to be and troubled loners like Diaz appears to be. They just happen to be fighters. What I don’t understand is him never cutting off the ring as Condit constantly circled to the left. Also, as easily as he took him down and got his back, why didn’t he do that more than once? It almost certainly would have won him the fight. Bad coaching? What?

you mustn ot smoke cus no it doesnt stay in your system for a month if you do the proper workout for 10 days to 2 weeks and your a pro athelte with low body fat you can get it out of your system way b4 a month. its fat soluable so when you have a low body fat you hold the thc for a shorter period of time. maybe a fat couchsurfer who smokes yes it stays in there system for a month but not a guy like diaz. he was prolly chiefing like 10 days b4 the fight but probably messed up his usual way to get it out his system cus he had to spend so much time with media for this fight. hes been doing this in strikeforce for a wile everyone knows he smokes. its just funny cus what if the fight were in california would it not matter?

In California there’s a soft legalization on marijuana. To get a medical marijuana card you basically just have to be an adult, and be smart enough to say you have a medical problem, and that you want to be prescribed marijuana. The end.

"social dyslexia"

I do believe that Nick Diaz is Socially Dyslexic. All of the symptoms are there, even Ceaser Gracie & Dana White said he had Social Issues. I am not a doctor, but I am a fighter. I do approve of the use of Medicinal Marajuana, I also approve of being intellegent enough to stop doing it way before your fight. Though with all the press & stuff (If you noticed he actually showed up to the conferences, etc.) I could see how he might potentially risk it, as his job was on the line anyways if he didn’t show up for the media.

I see both sides.

Agreed...

Nick Diaz has a social disease.

by Spoiler on Feb 9, 2012 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

agree

No doubt Nick does not have glaucoma and does not have an illness requiring him to need appetite stimulation. If he has anxiety there are many more appropriate medications, and if he has other mental illness MMJ is completely wrong as a therapeutic approach. If he had significant chronic pain he would probably not be able to train and fight the way he does. There are a lot of docs here giving people MMJ that should not be on it. The truth is that a very small percentage of patients on cannabis should be on it. Docs and “pharmacies” (can you be a pharmacy if you sell primarily brownies?) are making a bunch of money on this stuff so they have started giving it to whoever wants it.

for starters :). But in reality it doesnt matter if he has a medical card or not. Doesnt matter if its legal in whichever whatever state. It’s banned by the commission so he has no excuse to be clean when the PLANNED tests occur. Is just him not giving a shit.

Get a Real Script not a weed note!!

This is so BS it is not even funny. Weed is legal in the state he lives in and make more money for California then all other cash crops combined. It is far from a ped it slows everything you do down your reaction time your thought process. EVERYTHING. Why if they understand he uses pot to maintain which is legal in the state he lives in why don’t they get him a real script not some BS weed not. Get a script for marinol or drabibanol both are thc pills you get from you pharmacy and if you have the script they can not legally tell anyone you have thc in your system been using it for years to keep a fed job so it will work for him. But my guess is all the people around him are as stoned as he is and don’t look out for him like they should. He whopped Condit had him running like a girl and had herb in his system oh no f!@# off all you haters. Diaz go box and make the millions you deserve.

by ChrisGood805 on Feb 9, 2012 6:10 PM EST reply actions

it is a little bit funny...

It doesn’t make a difference if weed is legal in his state, it ain’t legal in MMA and that is all that matters so actually it is not BS. What is BS is that your boy tries to play by his own rules and when he gets popped and loses all of you fanboys cry just like he does. According to your methodology, Allistair Overeem should come in stoned out of his mind cause pot is even more legal in Holland. If you are gonna play the game then play by the rulles or don’t play at all… That’s right he is not playing anymore cause he is sore sport (and suspended sport at that) so now he can toke up all he wants. So get over it!

You High Homey?

Good thing the Judges got the decision right and awarded Condit his well deserved victory, cause if Diaz would have won they would have had to strip him of the belt and made things even more messed up. Hopefully all of these Diaz nuthuggers will finally STFU about the decision and move on. Now they all these Diaz fans will keep making excuses saying “how is weed bad, it doesn’t help you, and blah, blah, blah?” Good thing Nick says the UFC pays him too much cause now he will be giving up a huge portion of his purse. Serves the crybaby right!

GOOD

All I can say is I’m glad no rematch will happen. Condit deserves gsp. He’s been getting nothing but shit for about a year now. First it was diaz not going to press obligations so condit gets called up to fight gsp. Then diaz runs his fucking mouth calling out gsp and condit gets fucked over and has to step aside and he does so with class. Then gsp gets hurt and has to fight diaz. He baets diaz in a close fight. He accepts a rematch even tho his camp and manager tell him not to like a real g and now diaz fucks over his stupid loyal fans by not following rules. This is poetic justice! Condit deserves a shot at gsp. He is what an mma fighter should strive to be. Sorry if I offended anyone but I’m so mad at ppl like diaz who just don’t grow the fuck up.

by Dgreat on Feb 9, 2012 6:17 PM EST reply actions

I'm a DIaz fan too but..

He takes way too many chances, Nick says he can smoke up to 10 days out from a fight and piss clean because he drinks so much water, has such low body fat and you can sweat it out when he works out…he cut it too close this time and got caught

I like Diaz too but damn man, you’re not making it easy and just giving people ammo for those who dont like him..I dont think Dana will cut him though, I’d be surprised

by BmoreGoHarder on Feb 9, 2012 6:17 PM EST reply actions

IDK

He just might. But chances are he gets suspended and while he’s feeling sorry for himself he might just retire for awhile till the money starts calling and he’ll be back. It’s okay to smoke weed, but if a job is at stake why take the chance? He needs to grow up.

by Dgreat on Feb 9, 2012 6:21 PM EST reply actions

My opinion on it all

I dont think the marijuana had any affect in the outcome of the fight. Diaz implemented his gameplan and Condit did the same. All this shows to me is that Diaz has no respect for the UFC, the sport as a whole, or his fans. Its not an addictive drug and its definitely not performance enhancing in any way but its banned by the commission. If he was as serious about the sport as he makes out to be in his interviews then he could give it up for the 3 months of his fight camp

by DiGreatest on Feb 9, 2012 6:55 PM EST reply actions

Awesome article Fowlkes

From a guy who’s been clean and sober for nearly 20 years i really find it laughable that the antiquated drug laws still persist for marijuana. And it’s enlightening to see more and more people in general coming around to that fact. The prohibition causes more problems than it’s worth, in some ways mundane, in others profound, and this case sort of illuminates that.
But reeling it back i couldn’t agree with you more. The decision to puff or not to puff is squarely on Diaz’s shoulders. Too bad for us.

by sk00kes on Feb 9, 2012 7:09 PM EST reply actions

What a fucking idiot

A few points that I think all reasonable people can agree on:
Marijuana should be decriminalized or legalized; putting people in jail for smoking it does more harm than good.
Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug. Nick Diaz was probably not high during his actual fight with Condit (or the one with Gomi) and if he was, it didn’t improve his chances of winning.
If you know you’re fighting in the biggest fight of your life, you need to do whatever is necessary to not fuck up your own chances. If you know the athletic commission tests for weed, obviously you need to stop smoking far enough in advance to pass the test.

by philipquarles on Feb 9, 2012 7:11 PM EST reply actions

Regardless of our opinion Diaz made a mistake

Regardless what your opinion of weed is it is still considered illegal. Diaz has been down this road before and should have known better. I do enjoy watching me fight but the UFC is clearly trying to go mainstream one of their top fighters caught with weed in their system what kind of image does that show. I would like to see Diaz back but he needs to be punished for this

Really?

How long will it take the dancing monkeys in our government to figure out a way to profit and get reelected from marijuana?

by kevykev on Feb 9, 2012 7:28 PM EST reply actions

Legal doesn't mean allowed in competition.

Banned substances include painkillers, diuretics, and lots of other substances that are plenty legal to use. They aren’t legal to use if you are competing in this particular sport, and Nick Diaz knows that damned well. In fact, if he didn’t know, getting a loss on his record for it years ago might have reminded him.

He was knowingly breaking the rules of the sport he competed in, figured he wouldn’t get caught, and did. All this griping about if it should be legal or not is a complete non issue. It’s banned in the sport, and Diaz knew it was banned and went into the fight anyways.

Diaz fucked up, just like he fucked up in the fight by running forward getting punched for 5 rounds instead of changing his gameplan when plan A didn’t work. But what do you expect from a professional fuckup.

OK OR NOT

It doesn’t matter if you are ok with weed or against it, the fact is this is the law and if you break it, you break it. I drive down roads all the time that are 25 mph zones but they should easily be 40 mph zones HOWEVER if I CHOOSE to speed and get caught, it’s my own damn fault. Plain and simple.

This isn’t a debate on why weed should be ok or why it should be banned.. The fact is, it’s a drug that’s against the rules, and you either live with it or find another place that accepts weed. There’s shit at my job I don’t agree with, but you gotta do it. Nick just fucked up. Plain and simple.

If you care or not...

…is not really the point. If it’s legal or not isn’t the point either. It’s not even the point if it’s a PED or not. The point is it is a substance that you can’t have in your system when being tested. Maybe that is a stupid rule. Then it should be changed. But a rule being stupid doesn’t make it any less of a rule. And his camp had to be aware of this rule, that’s part of their job. So you can argue all day that on a moral level Nick shouldn’t get punished, but on a factual level you can not make that argument.

by altairograph on Feb 10, 2012 7:04 AM EST reply actions

Bullcrap

Anybody that can’t distinguish between an athlete abusing a substance that gives him an unfair advantage versus an athlete smoking pot which gives you the munchies is a certified moron. These commissions that have the balls to include marijuana in these tests while everyone knows that their tests don’t do a good job detecting performance enhancers and dish out selective discipline are full of crap. They should figure out how to enforce rules that matter and then play around with this bullshit. I do not care if these athletes are drinking or smoking weed, but i do care if they are cheating with drugs. Anybody who wants to take the moral high ground can go to hell.

Nick tests positive

Love Nick Diaz and his crazy skills and his warrior mentality.I’m not as much into the herb as I used to be and I’m fine with those that do enjoy and partake. These commissions need to take marijuana off the banned substance list. The only thing I did any better when I smoked was munch, and sit on the couch like I was cruisin’ in a low rider. It has no “performance enhancing” qualities whatsoever.Oh sure, I thought I was doing whatever I was doing better but by all accounts and testimony from witnesses, this wasn’t the case. But by the same token(no pun intended)Nick is in a profession that has its rules and regulations and should adhere to them.I hope all this doesn’t help Nick decide not to return.I and his many, many fans would be deprived of watching a true fighter. And in closing, I think Nick will come back because this is a passion of his and he does possess that never say die quality, you can see it in his eyes.If Nick doesn’t return, I will return to blazing a blunt a day till he does return. After rambling on, I realize after proof reading myself.I look like I’m writing this freaking stoned.I am not.LOL.Please don’t send the Nevada State Athletic Commission to my door.

by WpgCree on Feb 10, 2012 11:48 PM EST reply actions

lol

WpgCree, funny post. But Nick will be back for one, single reason. He is not qualified to do anything else that would make him serious money. The reality is he will be killed if he ever goes into boxing because he has no footwork and no head movement. He has no worthwhile degrees, I’m sure. And if he ventures into triathlons, etc (which he no doubt could do with his obvious cardio conditioning, mental toughness and swimming abilities), he’ll find out there’s no real money in it unless you are in the top very few competitors. So he’ll be back. A man’s got to eat. I don’t know much about him, but I was very unimpressed with Gracie and his management of Nick, no ability to get him to change tactics during the fight, and idiotic comments since the fight. Viewing from the outside, Nick and Nate should find a different guy. They are unbelievable punchers, but need to expand a little bit and get some better movement.

Its the dank and its been that way for a while, but testing a fighter for using marijuana is wrong. Steroids and growth hormones are obviosly terrible( AKA Barry Bonds Mark Mc G). Alcohol is far worse but the good ole boys in the south will keep it legal.
