UFC 143 Results: Carlos Condit Beats Nick Diaz

The UFC has a new interim welterweight champion: Carlos Condit, who won a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 143.

Feb 5, 2012 - After 25 minutes of action inside the Octagon, Carlos Condit defeated Nick Diaz in a hard-fought unanimous decision at UFC 143. The victory earns Condit the UFC interim welterweight championship and the right to face No. 1 welterweight Georges St. Pierre, who is recuperating from a knee injury and expected to return late this year.

The judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 for Condit.

"Hats off to Nick Diaz," Condit said afterward. "He's a warrior. I've got nothing but admiration and respect for how he fights."

Diaz was so unhappy with the decision that he said afterward he might retire from the sport.

"That ain't right," Diaz said. "I pushed him back the whole fight. ... I think I'm done with this MMA. ... I don't need this s--t."

In a very close first round, both men took some time feeling each other out and then they proceeded to engage in a tough and even kickboxing exchange, with the fight never going to the ground and neither man wanting to take it there. Diaz appeared to be more comfortable with the pace of the fight as the first round ended.

In the second round it became more Diaz's fight, as he began to land more of his trademark high-volume punching. He also started to do more of his taunting. In his corner after the round, Condit's coach Greg Jackson said, "Don't fall for it when he's talking to you," apparently concerned that Condit was getting sucked into Diaz's fight.

In the third Condit began to make it more his own fight, mixing knees and elbows in with his punches and kicks and diversifying his striking. But Diaz landed some hard punches as well in a very competitive, exciting round that was just heating up after five minutes.

Condit was coming alive in the fourth round, landing good solid shots and maintaining just as active a pace as Diaz. The fourth was a very good round for Condit, who had to feel good about his chances heading into the fifth.

And at the start of the fifth Condit looked great, and Diaz looked like he was wearing down. However, as the fifth went on Diaz got a second wind, and in the final minute of the fifth round Diaz took Condit down and took his back. Diaz wrapped Condit up in a body triangle and nearly sunk in a rear-naked choke, but Condit managed to pull free just before the fight came to an end, and the judges decided that Condit had won it.

And now Condit will prepare to face St. Pierre.

Nice job Carlos Condit

Wow that was a great fight i don’t know why Diaz is mad but then again he is never happy Condit won that fight fair and square and he is now the champion

Congratulation Mr Condit

diaz never happy lol

diaz did good always pushing forward but face it condit continued to strike with kicks just as much as diaz puched, and in later rounds was avoiding and landing more.

Carlos did WORK with that lead leg.

Condit fought a beautiful fight. Muay Thai trumped boxing this time around.

There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?

Carlos and Jackson Should be Ashamed

This was no fight – it was a track meet.

We need a rematch only this time Carlos should actually fight Diaz. Look at Edgar vs Maynard … that’s a championship fight!

Shame on you Jackson and Condit for ruining an opportunity for a championship fight!

by buddhakiller on Feb 5, 2012 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

This WAS a great fight.

You’re just upset that Diaz got his ass kicked. And boy did he get his ass kicked. Condit didn’t run away. If you knew anything about Martial Arts, or fighting in general, you would know that the man with the superior footwork and striking normally wins.

Condit did just that: He avoided Nick Diaz’s attempts to push him into the cage, moved in with heavy combinations then backed out to avoid damage. Condit won, Diaz lost. Get over it.

by fukoujiyuu on Feb 5, 2012 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

What exactly did Diaz do to actually justify him winning the fight?

Diaz’s gameplan consisted of trying to corner Condit or otherwise to clown or goad Condit into standing and trading, allowing Diaz to drive Condit back against the fence, to trap Condit and to unleash furious combinations of punches – that is, Diaz wanted to get Condit to fight DIaz’s fight, the way Donald Cerrone did. Condit didn’t bite, and effectively implements a stick-and-run gameplan where he landed more powerful strikes, escaped when Diaz tried to corner him (when Diaz didn’t bother trying to either clinch or grab Condit) and kept Diaz at bay with leg kicks which, over time, seemed to hurt Diaz.

What Diaz doesn’t get is that he didn’t lose because Condit refused to engage; Diaz lost because Condit refused to engage in the way Diaz wanted and Diaz didn’t change his plan for 24 of 25 minutes. Condit didn’t pull a Houston Alexander or a Caleb Starnes – Condit landed more strikes and did more damage and Diaz failed to adjust. Diaz’s BS is no different than Brock Lesnar complaining that Overeem didn’t win because he refused to engaging in a grappling match, contrary to Lesnar’s gameplan.

If Diaz truly can’t understand the difference between a fighter (Starnes, Alexander, e.g.) who runs away and one who won’t let Diaz get inside or let Diaz corner him, then Diaz is going to fail miserably at boxing, where effective fighters have to be ready to deal with opponents that want to fight inside, fight outside, hit-and-stick, counter-punch or bulldog, sometimes requiring a change of strategies mid-fight.

The long and the short of it: Diaz didn’t agree with the decision and, instead of trying to improve or modify his game or even to learn something from the fight, he decided to take his gloves, go home and cry, like the little baby that he is. Your display and your attitude are truly pathetic, Diaz, as even notorious man-child and emotionally-stuck-in-second-grader Josh Koscheck consistently demonstrates more class and maturity than you. Goodbye and good riddance, Nick – the undignified trainwreck that is your career will not be missed.

Diaz won

Besides your emotional opinion about Diaz, try to stick to the facts, Diaz won round 1, 2 and 5. How to adjust his gameplan when his opponent is runninga away in the octagon? Next time maybe he will tackle him with a kick or a takedown while he is running away like a scared little girl. Go shoot you pistols Condit. You should have a running career.. maybe you should challenge Diaz to a race?
Diaz the true fans we know you are THE REAL WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION. CONGRATULATIONS !!

Diaz lost

Diaz did not win round 1. He won rounds 2 and 5. Go check out fightmetric. It isn’t biased. It doesn’t lie. Condit fought a great Lyoto Machida style fight and won, even though the first 3 rounds were all very close.

by zadavat on Feb 5, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Diaz would win in a race but not in a fight.

I don’t see how anyone thinks Diaz won? I feel like maybe people weren’t paying attention to the actual fight. Diaz walked forward and got punched in the face. Neither of them got hurt throughout the fight but at least Condit was using the cage and striking effectively. If Diaz actually tried to cut Condit off or clinch him then maybe he could have done something? The only reason Diaz is mad is because he came into the octagon with no gameplan and expected Condit to stand still and get punched in the face. He got frustrated and lost. Condit is mentally superior- he wanted to trade with Diaz but he didn’t do it because he knew he could frustrate Diaz by circling.

Well said. Mostly.

Nice breakdown of the fight. My only disagreement is that I would miss Diaz’s fight. He has provided a lot of good ones over the years. I totally agree withyou on the rest, though.

Lets see, superior foot work in your mind equals running…..Ummmmmm. your such a dumb ass. Peace of shit Condit ran a dam marathon in the octagon and you think that’s superior foot work???

by Catalyst323 on Feb 5, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Good thing you're not a trainer

What dumbass would stand there and let Diaz go off? That’s what Nick does – he walks people down – everyone knows it. Condit had the perfect gameplan, and it worked, just like Edgar’s gameplan vs. Penn. Strike and get out. Condit landed the more significant strikes. You can’t do that if you don’t “actually fight” someone. If a trading brawl is all that does it for you, seek entertainment elsewhere.

by JitsMasta on Feb 5, 2012 2:29 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

just like Edgar’s gameplan vs. Penn

no way dude it wasn’t like Edgar’s game plan what are you talking about..Edgar didn’t run.. he was in and out off the pocket which is fine but Carlos trun his back to Diaz and that is running..it was a close fight and once again i question the judging in the ufc.. Carlos got the win but not my respect he ran

by Neil midnight on Feb 5, 2012 8:10 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed. That’s just the Jackson’s camp style. They don’t mind running, or LNPing to get the win and make the money. They don’t mind being sneaky or manipulative. But, guess what…It works, so who can blame em.
As much as Condit’s style was lame, blame Diaz for not adapting. By the end of the 2nd round he should’ve realized the dude wants no part of you, homey.
And for all these people defending Carlos’ tactics, 90% of you morons were hating on Jon Jones for running against Rampage and he did it a tenth as much as Condit. Also, he subbed Rampage’s ass, all Condit wanted was a decision.

by EyebrowsMulligan on Feb 5, 2012 3:09 AM EST up reply actions

You do realize

that Condit has 26 finishes out of 28 victories?

Yeah, he wanted the finish and tried for it.

by fukoujiyuu on Feb 5, 2012 3:40 AM EST up reply actions

That stat proves my point almost as much as the actual footage of the fight and Condit’s own post-fight admissions.

by EyebrowsMulligan on Feb 5, 2012 3:42 AM EST up reply actions

I agree!!

I hate fighters who fight differently just to get that title shot. Condit lost a fan here. All Jackson fighters near a title shot fight a different fight that got that fighter where they are. What a joke!!! I’ve been an MMA fan since 06 and Condit has been awesome to watch, but now I’m sick of watching any Jackson fighters. He’s going to ruin MMA. Dan Henderson and Shogun went all out fighting their style. Condit did not fight like Condit.

by Withdrawal on Feb 5, 2012 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

I guess you’re a dumy who wants nothing but slug fests? that the whole point of the “MMA” thing is to come up with a strategy to beat WHOEVER YOU"RE FIGHTING. why do you think GSP stood with KOS and not Hardy? that’s called a strategy, you take your opponents best attribute and make it not matter. Condit didn’t fight like he usually does because Diaz is an unusual MOFO. he took a lion and mad his dance around Seigfried and Roy style. If you come out the same evry fight (like Diaz) you get predictable, and sooner or later somebody throws you a hand you don’t usually get dealt( or baby leg kicks lol) and you freeze and wonder why he didn’yt play to your “gameplan”.

by Noose6885 on Feb 6, 2012 2:53 AM EST up reply actions

Terrible decision

MMA is a hand to hand combat sport, not track meet, not a ballet with pitty-pat ineffective strikes. This isn’t fencing. It is a fight…..or it is supposed to be.

There was only point in the entire track meet that looked like a fight, or even a martial art at full contact…….it was the only point where either fighter was in any danger of being submitted or stopped….. and Diaz owned that moment at the end of the 5th when he took Condit’s back after Condit couldn’t quite finish that 5th mile of running away.

I’m going to add that in the replays, nearly all of Condit’s “strikes” were blocked by Diaz, or slipped, or so weak that they didn’t even register as strikes.

If you run for an entire round, and never daze your opponent with counter strikes, or put him jeopardy of a submission at least ONCE, you should lose the round 10 – 8.

This is MMA, not a track meet. Even boxing will give the TKO to a fighter who faces an opponent who only runs, and will not fight. Condit only even stopped or came forward maybe 20 seconds of a 25 minute fight, and his “strategy” of running never produced a single solid strike from this supposedly world class striker.

Completely stupid decision…. Condit should have had points taken for running…. just like Caleb Starnes…. the original “Running Man”

by Justaguy11 on Feb 5, 2012 3:14 AM EST up reply actions

Watch the fight again

The only time Diaz adapted to Condit’s gameplan is in the 5th round. He walked forward getting punched in the face until that moment. Condit used the entire cage to beat Diaz and if Diaz had a problem with that he should have tried to cut him off- instead he walked in a straight line and got punched in the face. Go watch the Tito Ortiz vs Lyoto Machida fight. Same shit- TIto walked forward and couldn’t cut Lyoto off and then almost got him in a triangle when he finally started to adapt. It’s the same in any sport- if the Giants are getting shutdown all day when they try to run the ball I doubt they’ll continue to run in the 2nd half- and if they do I’ll bet you they lose.

Nick has pillow fists

He might want to go back to his jui jitsu background and quit trying to be a boxer. His high volume punching is impressive but he hits as hard as my 2 year old nephew. If he is gonna keep acting like a 12 year old with emotional problems maybe he should retire.

by BaddyMaddington on Feb 5, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Diaz gambled and lost

He thought he could bait Condit into a brawl and it didn’t go down. He wasn’t protecting himself and Condit picked him apart. I was very disappointed in Nick. He only decided to really turn it on in the 4th and 5th. He really relies on the fact that guys aren’t in the shape he’s in. He did the same thing to BJ and lost the 1st round. I told you all before, Condit should’ve been the favorite. Diaz never beat anyone as good as Condit before. BJ is old and belings at 55

LOL. No one, not even Dana “Bald Bozo” White has Condit winning the first four. Time to rewatch, but polish the spectacles first.

by EyebrowsMulligan on Feb 5, 2012 3:12 AM EST up reply actions

Condit could have won all 5 depending on how you scored it

First of all Dana says certain things so he won’t take as much heat. There is a lot going on he doesn’t always even remember how he scores every round. Going by what he says is meaningless because he scores it just like we all score it. If you were to ask me- Condit won the first 4 and I would give Diaz the 5th just because of that takedown (even though Condit got out of it and caused more damage in his counterattack).

Octagon control – Condit used the whole cage, circled, etc. Diaz walked forward.
Aggression – The one time Condit was in danger (in the 5th) he got out and put a quick beating on Diaz. Diaz walked forward.
Effective striking- Condit used all kinds of strikes- not of all of them landed. Neither opponent was hurt or staggered the entire fight but in all replays it was Condit with the better striking and he outstruck Diaz with punches and kicks. Diaz walked forward.
Effective grappling- Condit escaped and countered in the one attemp Diaz made to grapple. Afterwards they stood up and Diaz walked forward.
Clean strikes- All replays of clean strikes show strikes by Condit. Diaz walked forward.

My opinion- Diaz likes getting hit and likes showing that it doesn’t phase him. Thats all cool and sometimes that breaks fighters mentally but Condit didn’t give a shit. Diaz should have tried to cut Condit off or maybe should have done something other than walking into punches.

by vlaliberte on Feb 5, 2012 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

really?

WTF? I can agree with some of the things you said, but the title? Ya ok and sonnen beat silva if you only score 4 rounds. the patriots should have won if it wasn’t for those stupid “feildgoals” the giants kept getting. to say that either fighter won more than 3 is retarded ( hey f you I have a retarded friend who watched the fight with me and he said that so there!). It was a close fight and to say any different only shows my retarded freind know more about MMA than you.

It was a hell of a fight!

but Diaz was NOT the clear winner. Honestly, I felt it was pretty much even heading into the 4th and Condit took over.

I did pick Condit to win and in this exact same fashion, but Diaz has NOTHING to be ashamed of. He put up one hell of a fight and proved all of the Zuffa zombies wrong about his status as a top ten WW. He is tough as nails and deserves to have his shot if he wins a few more fights.

What a fight!

by superfknmario_ on Feb 5, 2012 1:01 AM EST reply actions

Exactly.

Both men are top 5 welterweights, but Carlos Condit proved that he was severely overlooked in this fight. I thought this was one of the best fights of 2012, regardless of the outcome.

by fukoujiyuu on Feb 5, 2012 2:28 AM EST up reply actions

Condit

Great fight. Congrats Condit. I know it was close. And a lot of peeps think Diaz won the fight. But did he? Carlos didn’t fight Diaz’s fight, he fight his fight. Excellent striking, and avoided getting cornered by Diaz. If he were to stand and bang no question Diaz would win those exchanges, but Condit didn’t let that happen. There’s always a possibility of a rematch to appease all the haters I guess.

by fritzo on Feb 5, 2012 1:03 AM EST reply actions

No way Diaz won.

It was very close heading into the 4th, but Condit definitely took that rd and the 5th was another toss up. It was razor thin, but Condit landed the more effective shots IMO

"No way Diaz won....

but it was razor thin." LOL brilliant.

by EyebrowsMulligan on Feb 5, 2012 3:25 AM EST up reply actions

What's wrong with that?

Condit edged him out in each rd that he won. Saying it was close doesn’t necessarily mean that it could have gone either way.

by superfknmario_ on Feb 5, 2012 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Diaz Lost

There wont be a rematch, it wasn’t a “split decision” or “bullshit decision” Carlos punished Diaz anytime Diaz came forward, Diaz missed two out of three takedowns and at the end Carlos was on top beating up Diaz.
I felt the pace was truly set by Condit despite him “backing up” or “running” it was an illusion to lure Diaz into what he felt was his game plan and punish him.

by Vulkin on Feb 5, 2012 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

Rematch, maybe

Only reason I’m saying potential rematch, is because of money and GSP. GSP is out till November (maybe) and who else is due for a title fight? So, just to make sure Diaz doesn’t retire, give him a rematch. Although I don’t agree with it.

by fritzo on Feb 5, 2012 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

Who cares if Diaz retired???? I don’t he is a crybaby. If you don’t give me the decision I will bitch out. That isn’t a real fighter if you ask me. All of the good fighters will tell you that you should learn something from a Loss. Don’t think any of them say, cry like a bitch when you lose!

Good job Condit, but backpedaling and throwing front kicks and leg kicks for 5 rounds dosnt constitute a victory in my book. He probably back peddled the boston marathon that fight

try running away away and avoiding A FIGHT. His gameplan was to avoid fighting and throw front kicks. which om bjj is used to keep people away or set up takedowns. he used it to score points. Did you notice that too?

Condit looked like Cruz.

I like how he has a really dynamic game in the octo. Condit can fight, no doubt about that.

But Nick Diaz is one of the most over rated fighters I have ever seen. He can’t adjust mid-match, and if the other guy isn’t standing RIGHT in front of him, the flat footed Diaz can’t do anything.

We did find out that Diaz’s footwork is terrible, and he uses the same strategy every time he gets inside. He fought a dumb fight, and deserved to lose.

by Gi Joe on Feb 5, 2012 1:56 AM EST up reply actions

Ground game

I thought Nick would take this fight to the ground early, just to eliminate Condit’s stand up. We all know Nick has great BJJ, so why not utilize it. Why stand and bang with a guy who likes to stand a bang as much as you (just more technically). Lesson learned by Nick, only time will tell.

by fritzo on Feb 5, 2012 1:59 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

That is exactly how nick has any losses. when a guy will bang with him or takes nick to the ground, nick wins. when they avoid and counter, he loses. wonder what happens to condit when gsp grounds him?

Running forward and missing over half the strikes you throw in a round isn’t how to win either. I would have been upset if Diaz won that fight and I even hoped he would. He didn’t do any significant damage, takedowns were stuffed with ease until the fifth round, no real sweating by Condit in the submission attempts. Also this is MMA not boxing, good footwork and head movement is showing intelligent fighting while Condit obviously punished Diaz on anything he attempted.

Let's be honest: Midnight edition of Jus' Sayin'

If Nick can’t handle someone who can move out the way, then there’s no hope for him against GSP. Jus’ Sayin’.

Let’s be clear, that wasn’t a good fight. Not that I’m a wrestling, ground fighting fetishist by any stretch. The fact remains that the fight was Nick moving forward with insignificunt (yeah, I said it) strikes and Conduit (yeah, I said it) retreating with better counter punching/kicking. It wasn’t a good fight. It was a smart fight for Condit. Jus’ Sayin’.

Not a good fight?

It was a great fight, it was just a fight of who was more technical and showed a HUGE hole in Diaz fighting. If he can’t get you against the cage and beat you up he can’t do nothing but talk shit and walk forward.
But I agree he wouldn’t have had a chance against GSP and it showed tonight. Let the cry baby retire in my opinion, if he can’t take a loss then he doesn’t belong in MMA period. Who would have won a boxing fight but this is MMA.

Gameplan

GSP wants the Diaz fight to prove that he can take him down and beat him up on the ground. GSP won’t get into any exchanges, just like Carlos did, with Nick. GSP and his camp does a great job of game planning for fights. If that fight ever happened, GSP would win via decision, hands down.

LOL at "Martin Chapmann"

I’m a big fan of Kampmann, he was my kickboxing coach when I trained at Xtreme Couture, but even I thought he lost to Condit. I was glad he got the decision regardless, but Carlos really outstruck Martin.

Anyone who knows me from BE knows that it’s pretty huge when I say anything against Kampmann.

I thought it was a great fight – very competative. Condits footwork and striking versitility won out over Nick’s pressuring intimidating style. Nick never got to fire off his high volume punches except on rare occasion because of Condits excellent movement and defence.

Hahah

Those judges were way off. It was closer to a draw not a unanimous decision. Another BS Greg Jackson gameplan to squeak a fight, sad even Condit acknowledged that at the end of the fight. Condit was visibly rocked more than once but Diaz should have shot on him, look how easy he took his back. Oh well, time for Condit to go get crushed by GSP. Maybe he will get hit by a meteor then Diaz gets the fight by default. You guys know Dana White went FFFFFFFFFFF*********CCCCCCCCCKKKK There went my payday. I thought it was going to be better on both fighters part.

Dude

You are waaaay too picky. Im sure Dana was rooting for Diaz much like he was rooting for Sonnen against Bisping, but Condit clearly won that fight. It was close, but not THAT close. 49-46 sounded about right. Each rd was close with Condit taking the majority by a razor thin blade.

The judges were not way off. Condit won rounds 1, 3 and 4, and round 2 was kind of a toss-up. It was a good fight. It was a close fight every round, with only rounds 4(Condit) and 5 (Diaz) being easy to call, but Condit clearly landed more shots and harder shots and more impressive shots throughout the fight. Diaz can whine all he wants, but he lost fair and square, and the judges got it right.

by zadavat on Feb 5, 2012 1:11 AM EST up reply actions

Lol

So you have Diaz at round 1 and 5 and Condit 2, 3, and 4? Diaz won round 5 but that’s it really. He didn’t really do shit to Condit the whole fight but cuss/talk/walk forward. Landed significant body shots a few times but ate a lot of power shots, leg kicks and kicks to the body after landing those. Condit even pressed forward a few times.
He WANTED Diaz to press him, it was HIS game plan to make Diaz THINK he was fighting HIS fight but he was fighting Condits.

by Vulkin on Feb 5, 2012 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

Diaz didn’t land any “Significant” blows. As Rogan/Goldy stated both Diaz brothers throw “bunches” of punches and it is the volume that does damage. If there is no VOLUME, then there is no DAMAGE. There was NO Damage done by Diaz. He throws limp wristed puss punches, no POWER!!

by Ledslnger on Feb 5, 2012 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

Round 1: Condit barely
Round 2: too close to call
Round 3: Condit barely
Round 4: Condit clearly
Round 5: Diaz barely (by virtue of the takedown and submission attempts near the end.

Our whole group of folks watching thought Condit won 3-2 or 4-1.

by zadavat on Feb 5, 2012 1:06 AM EST reply actions

wow

I’m beginning to think everyone’s bias gave us all jaded glasses. condit missed or had blocked nearly everything he threw in the first 2, and diaz out landed and was the aggressor. condit clearly owned rnd 3, but the exchanges in 4 were a bit closer, with an edge to condit. condit was trying to win the 5th, but he was taken down, and that should’ve done it. sometimes scared wins—-it did tonight.

by stangmark on Feb 5, 2012 1:58 AM EST up reply actions

Normally you’re comments are solid (when you’re not half-drunk and losing your shit on someone), but what’s with the double standard. Weren’t you pissing all over Jones for running from Rampage?? Condit took that strategy to the nth power, but suddenly “what a fight1”

by EyebrowsMulligan on Feb 5, 2012 3:18 AM EST up reply actions

eff. your you know what I mean.

by EyebrowsMulligan on Feb 5, 2012 3:18 AM EST up reply actions

Now that I've sobered up :-P

I honestly don’t see a double standard. Diaz pressed forward the whole fight and Condit used kicks, knees, and punches while keeping distance. Diaz’s pressure is like no other fighter in MMA, so you’re going to HAVE to move back over 50% of the fight.

Condit didn’t pull a Starnes and I wouldn’t even compare it to Edgar vs BJ since Edgar bounced in and out while BJ just stood there. Condit simply didn’t let himself get trapped against the fence where he would have his back against a cage throwing half-arm punches while Diaz tees-off on him. You’d have to be stupid to do that. Condit engaged as Diaz came forward and got out of the way when he got against the cage.

In regards to Jones/Rampage. Condit did use alot of leg kicks and that was probably the difference. Leg kicks may not seem like much, but they do hurt and can be the difference maker as it was in this fight. However, Jones never even gave Page the opportunity to strike with him. He used leg kicks and push kicks any time he got close and it’s not like Page rushes forward like Diaz. If anything, Page is pretty flat footed.

Honest question, which of the two fights did you get more enjoyment out of?

In the end, I had Condit winning the fight and was entertained throughout. It wasn’t “get out of your seat fun”, but I enjoyed it and wouldn’t have had a problem with either guy winning it. Hell, I hope Diaz gets the winner of GSP/Condit! Wishful thinking, I know.

by superfknmario_ on Feb 5, 2012 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t say barely on round 3, but fair enough scoring in my opinion since I don’t feel like being picky :P

by Vulkin on Feb 5, 2012 1:16 AM EST up reply actions

Condit used leg kick s and lateral movements to avoid the volume punches of Diaz.
In cases Diaz came inside got a few punches, Condit ran to the left side of his.

Nice game plan by Jackson camp.
One can only wonder why Diaz didnt increase the intensity in round 4 and 5. He should have clinched Condit up towards the fence in round 4 to tire him out. then in round 5 just run after Condit like wildman.

by MMAFun on Feb 5, 2012 1:07 AM EST reply actions

Condit 3 to 2

Diaz clearly won first two rounds and Carlos won last 3 very close fight though…however GSP will walk over Condit

I see Condit beating GSP unless GSP wants to grind him with wrestling for five rounds which may be the case. falls asleep if so

Love GSP but the guy really needs to not play it safe, he looked good against Shields until an eye poke but look at other champions, they are not playing it safe and making for much more entertaining fights. And yes hardcore GSP fans I know he fights hard opponents but he could have finished plenty of them as well :)

So, all fighters are supposed to stand there and trade with Diaz because you want to see a brawl.

OK. Then go watch ShoBox if you want to see boxing. Condit fought a brilliant fight, and nick diaz lost fair-and-square.

At least I can’t accuse Dana White of a fix. This is good for the sport. Diaz is a mentally fragile wimp who can’t fight in the UFC. Go back to strike force where you can fight chumps.

by livepunch on Feb 5, 2012 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

and you consider the Garcia/Zombie fight "MMA"?

Yeah, it was fun to watch, but in reality, it was a sloppy fight that you could catch in an alley behind the local bar.

Not every fight is going to be a barn-burner. Some are a technical masterpiece, like this last fight! Diaz pushed the pace and Condit stuck to the gameplan and outpointed him. It’s not like he played it safe, it’s that Diaz’s style doesn’t leave alot of options aside from being sucked into his game or picking him apart. Condit essentially did both!

by superfknmario_ on Feb 5, 2012 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

Not at all!

Oh, c’mon now! I know enough to know that I shouldn’t expect Griffin/Bonnar out of the gate, but this fight didn’t go where I thought it would. With Diaz’s vaunted BJJ and Condit’s ground control I was expecting a little more than what I saw. Condit did what he needed to. Diaz thought marching forward and getting tagged the whole time was the way to win. If he really does retire and goes into boxing he’ll have a rude awakening.

Life's hard in barn yard.

by livepunch on Feb 5, 2012 1:43 AM EST up reply actions

Boxing

He might do decent in boxing, who knows really. There are more rounds in boxing, so he’ll have a good chance of winning decisions. I don’t know, I hope he doesn’t retire, there are so many other welterweights who are hungry and are willing to fight him.

by fritzo on Feb 5, 2012 1:46 AM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

but why would Condit even bother going to the ground with Diaz if he felt he could hold his own in the stand-up? Diaz is not known for his power, he is known for his volume and Condit obviously felt he could handle it. There are very VERY few people that could do what Condit did tonight and granted, it may not have been as spectacular as an all-out war and it didn’t have a all aspects of MMA in it, but it was a great show of will by Condit. In essence, I think Condit beat Diaz at his own game. That alone made it worthwhile for me.

You're right.

Maybe I got sucked into the hype train a little. There was a lot of focus on Nick’s BJJ and we saw none of it until the end of that one round and only briefly at that point. I won’t say I was wrong in saying it wasn’t a good fight, but I will say it was a fine fight. Are we good?

by MMAFights on Feb 5, 2012 1:12 AM EST reply actions

Condit, way to go

Condit is clearly the better fighter. Condit proved something else to Diaz. You can be intense and not be a dick. I love it, Diaz has faced other guys with better skillsets, but the pace he set usually wore them down. Tonight he met a guy with a better skillset, plus a guy who could match his pace.

I’m not surprised Diaz is taking his ball and going home. That seems to be the type of guy he is.

by Brian R. on Feb 5, 2012 1:14 AM EST reply actions

Seriously guys

Condit fought DIAZ’S FIGHT only better!! How do you not see this? Yeah, Diaz moved forward, but he didn’t land as crisp as Condit. It’s as simple as that! It was in NO WAY a robbery! Close fight yes, but Condit edged it out and it is pretty obvious.

by superfknmario_ on Feb 5, 2012 1:14 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Actually

I think Diaz ended up falling right into Condit’s gameplan. Condit wanted Diaz to push the pace, to try to lure him into a brawl. Diaz plods forward, Condit slams his leg, sticks a jab in his face. Diaz backs him into the fence, Condot circles out, sticking him with another leg kick or jab. It was a beautiful gameplan.

by Brian R. on Feb 5, 2012 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

He fought to win and put on a pretty good show IMO. Diaz was the star of the show with his relentless pace and taunting, but a high pace and dropping your hands will not win you fights.

Aside from that, I agree that I’ll pick GSP to win against Condit and would have preferred a Diaz victory since I find that match-up more interesting. Hopefully, Condit beats GSP and we get to see GSP/Diaz sooner rather than later!

diaz/condit

in the ufc, when it goes to the judges, it’s just an opinion who won the round, but it is supposed to be scored on who dominated the round. I’m just as biased as the next guy, but condit did nothing of significance in the first two rounds except run away. he won the third but neither did much in the 4th, but at the end of the 5th he was fighting for his life. if condit dominated how is it that diaz was never down or even threatened. sorry, but when a fighter runs away for the whole fight he didnt dominate. he did what he had to do to survive and even win, but he did not dominate.

I didn’t see this fight and go OMG Condit is tearing Nick up and neither did any of you because neither of them were doing anything fabulous except the last attempt and counter tie up, that is what the fight should have been like for the whole 5 rounds. I hope Greg Jackson gets hit by a meteor or deported and confined to New York. This guy is why Dana White stuffs his face with Pinkberry at night.

Diaz won close fight. TWO JUDGES scoring it 49-46 means it was a bag job.

Decision is an utter disgrace. Rogan and Goldberg have no choice but to tow the party line in this one. Diaz won a close fight. Two judges scored it 49-46? Horseshit. TWO…not one lone idiot…TWO…that tells me all I need to know. Horseshit. Zuffa can’t control diaz…no way is he getting the belt on a decision. Neither will his brother. Condit ran away and kicked Nick’s leg for eighty percent of the fight. Dana sucks and Zuffa are a pack of Ron Paul worshipping right wing assholes. Yes…Ron Paul. If Joe Rogan tweets for Ron Paul you gotta know that’s who Dana likes…Too bad Nick. I wish there was competition to the UFC. NOBODY SHOULD BUY ST PIERRE CONDIT…it will suck.

by superfknmario_ on Feb 5, 2012 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

Since when did Condit start running from a fight. Smart on his part, I guess the only way to beat Diaz is to run from him, and throw spinning backhands all night without landing any of them. Condit’s strikes looked sloppy most of the time, didnt really land much for 5 rounds, and that was because he was ready to run as soon as Diaz threw anything.

by Maine1 on Feb 5, 2012 2:39 AM EST up reply actions

Diaz's Point

I think you all missed Diaz’s point. He doesn’t accept it as a loss because the points system the judges employ is flawed. You should not be allowed to fight the type of fight that Carlos Condit fought. You should be penalized for evasion and not engaging. You should be rewarded for ring control, the amount of damage the strikes you land cause, aggression etc.The same logic goes for GSP. Ever since he’s gotten the belt he lays on top of his opponent and grinds out a decision. Never attempts a submission or really attempts any strikes. Just wrestles out a UD win.

by matthew.carmody1 on Feb 5, 2012 1:27 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

he did engaged, he out landed diaz, did more damaged, and counter very efficiently

by jayeff1 on Feb 5, 2012 1:30 AM EST up reply actions

You should attempt to engage in efficiently learning some proper English. He did not engage he evaded the entire fight. Any strikes he landed were counters and nothing more. Not knocking counter striking either. But fighting an entire fight on it is BS. Greg Jackson’s fighters (not Jones) are like the New Jersey Devils of MMA. They play a neutral zone trap.

by matthew.carmody1 on Feb 5, 2012 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

You clearly don't know what you are talking about when you play the "english" card

Guillard and Cawin have fought under Jackson. I would name more, but you clearly lack MMA knowledge and are not worthy of going into deeper discussion of what constitutes a great fight. I’m sure that your definition of a great figtht is Garcia vs Zombie(ironic that Garcia is a Jackson fighter). Run along now.

Re:

I get what you’re saying and what Nick has said in the past. He even mentioned before that US MMA should impose YELLOW CARDS like Japan for “stalling” or whatever. That being said, I don’t think that implies to this fight. Condit was attacking Nick, he stuck and moved, avoided take downs, (all but 1) and he landed some nice clean kicks to different parts of the body. Diaz just couldn’t get to him. He should’ve figured that out after RD 1.

by davidbjjj on Feb 5, 2012 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

Correct

RIGHT. Biog Country was moving Verdum back the whole fight; but does that mean he won?

Diaz is a sore loser, he had no answer for the technique and skill of condit. Condit must watch a lot of Dominic Cruz film. He looked like a bigger version of Cruz, when Cruz fought Faber the second time.

Condit was very smart in this respect: He knew that Diaz doesn’t have one punch knockout power. So if he gets hit once or twice in an exchange, he won’t suffer much damage. Condit was brilliant. I gave him round 1-4, and Diaz round 5 as a charity round. But I thought the take down and sub attempt at the end was not effective and when condit got out of it before the bell, Diaz lost the points in my book.

Over all, Diaz didn’t do anything to win the fight. But condit hit him more, stopped all but one take down, and landed combos at a higher rate, and was never in trouble.

Good for carlos. I knew diaz had met his match because NO WAY was Condit going to trade with him. Buh Bye Nicky! Enjoy unemployment you quitter!

by BlueJay_ on Feb 5, 2012 1:35 AM EST reply actions

EXACTLY

The reason why his “volume” wasn’t there is because he just couldn’t catch Condit.

But i think that anyone who says Condit should have stood there and traded with Diaz is either 1) stupid or 2) stupid and delusional.

If you are fighting a guy who’s strong point is standing there and trading, are you going to do that? Condit was smart; he watched film and didn’t fall for the diaz mind-crap.

It’s like the people who said GSP was a pussy for not going to the ground with jake Shields. When you fight, you want to fight YOUR fight. When you “engage” another fighter at their strengths, you lose.

And if Nick Diaz doesn’t like getting kicked, then he should really quit MMA and box a washed up has been like Jeff Lacey…who will proceed to mash Diaz’s face worse than it was against Noons.

Funny how for years people were saying how dumb fighters were to stand in front of Diaz and brawl with him, and then when someone fights a smart fight and doesn’t go toe-toe with Diaz and wins, you call him a “pussy”.

You shouldn’t be allowed to fight like that, huh? OK. The I think fighters like Jake Shields, who spend most of their time on the ground, shouldn’t be allowed to fight “boring” fights like that.

Nick Diaz has no game plan or strategy. he looks confused, frustrated, and out-classed. He landed nothing of significance, and Condit landed some amazing combos on Diaz.

Done with this shit

This was f’n ridiculous. Diaz clearly won at least 3 out of 5. I think I’m done with this shit until UFC can come up with some judging that actually makes sense. There are a bunch of Diaz haters on here that are blinded by their dislike of him. At least he presses the action and makes the fight interesting. Condit is a good fighter but in my opinion was exposed tonight and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to support him as a beast of a fighter again. In Condit even said he would move forward and press the fight, then he ran. He landed only a few combinations but nothing that ever actually hurt Diaz. Every card is having bad decisions lately and it’s becoming a waste of my time to watch at this point…and I’ve been a fan for over 15 years before the Zuffa era and Dana White started opening his dumbass mouth. Even Rogan was a joke tonight on the commentary. Not one person I watched the fight with tonight, including Condit fans, thought Condit won this fight. UFC….can I please get my f’n money back.

by Thiswasbull$hit on Feb 5, 2012 1:55 AM EST reply actions

Nuthugger???

What are you…15? I’m a fight fan first. I WAS a fan of Condit! If Diaz lost…why wasn’t he ever in real danger during the fight like Condit was a few times. Rampage vs Machida…explain that then. Machida landed more punches but moved back the whole time. Rampage won because he pressed the fight. Even Diaz did more damage than Rampage had to Machida. All I want is some freaking consistancy. Condit won 2 rounds at best.

by Thiswasbull$hit on Feb 5, 2012 2:21 AM EST up reply actions

It seems like what the judges take notice is: who was able to impose their will on the other? Diaz chased Condit around the whole fight, hardly landing anything of significance. Condit was able to stick and move, and counter-punch whenever he wanted to. Diaz couldn’t impose his will, and Condit did.

by matikal on Feb 5, 2012 2:39 AM EST up reply actions

judging

Judging in MMA has been soooo terrible over the years. But like Dana always says, don’t leave it in the hands of the judges. Diaz knows that. He’s no dummy, take the fight to the ground and go for submissions, try to win, don’t think a a guy is going to fight your fight and bang it out. Diaz is smarter than that, right?

Dude! What are you talking about? Diaz got worked! Watch it again.

by Diaz is weak sauce! on Feb 5, 2012 2:37 AM EST up reply actions

I agree... this was Caleb Starnes II

Condit ran, with his back to Diaz, continuously throughout every round. Every. Round.
“Stick and move” is a strategy. Run and run and run and run and run and only land one effective kick to the head (which wasn’t even hard enough to rattle Diaz in the slightest), and a bunch of not-impressive slap leg kicks………………….. I completely agree with the poster who said they were probably done with the UFC.
This wasn’t a fight. This was a pursuit by Diaz met with a completely ineffective slow-him-down counter attack from Condit.

Remember this, kids: Fighting is a metaphor, and replacement, for war. In war, if you give up ground continously and never strike a crippling blow to the enemy, you lose…or you’re French. If Condit HAD been in an alley, for the amount of running away he did, the alley would have had to be 4 miles long.

If this is truly representative of MMA, which is a FIGHTING SPORT born of the need for SELF DEFENSE AND HAND TO HAND COMBAT, then MMA as a spectator sport is done. Clearly, the next great MMA champ will be the guy who holds the Guinness Book of records for running the mile backwards.

I watched this fight with 4 MMA fighters…… none of them gave the decision to Condit.

This was not a fight on Condit’s part….. it was a backwards running track meet with pitty pat slaps that didn’t damage Diaz, didn’t slow him down, and never hurt him. At best, every round was a draw, with the 5th round going to Diaz for the takedown and near armbar/choke. That was the sole danger point in the entire match, and it went to Diaz.

All you fan boys claiming that anyone who disagrees with the decision is a “Nuthugger” or “Doesn’t understand MMA” are complete imbeciles.

This was Caleb Starnes II.

The UFC needs to change the rules if they want to continue as a spectator sport. If you run away for an entire round, and fail to do any damage, or put your opponent in jeopardy of a submission, the round needs to be scored 10 -8 against you.

Period.

This is MMA, not a track meet.

Agree with poster. If this is UFC’s version of MMA, I’m done with it.

by Justaguy11 on Feb 5, 2012 3:01 AM EST up reply actions

I'm sorry but at what point did Diaz do damage??

I’ll agree Diaz didn’t seem that hurt by Condit’s attacks but Diaz’s attacks were non-existant. Unless you consider the hands down shit talking and posturing an attack. Diaz tried to be cocky like Anderson Silva without the skills to back it up, when Silva showboats he finishes the fight instead of letting it go to the judges.
The only time Condit showed his back was when he spun away from being backed into the cage, and he usually landed a few shots on the way out.
Even removing the leg kicks Condit had the better of the punching too.
Questions: Why did Diaz wait for the last minute to go to his BJJ? Why did he think maurading forward without attacking is fight winning strategy? Condit looked like he got done with a run, Diaz looked somehow more ugly than when he started. Not a domination by Cindut but a poor show by Diaz

What a great fight!… For Carlos Condit! Man he worked his game plan to a T. Nick is such a poor sport. He wants people to not think he is a cry baby thug, but unfortunately that’s what he is! Just because you follow someone around while they punch and kick you in the face, and destroy your leg with leg kicks, does not mean you win, Nick Diaz. Poor sports quit when they loose. And that’s just what you did. You lost! If you watch it again closely, you will see that Condit won every round easily, with the exception of the fifth, and that one was to close to call. Diaz had to try and taunt Carlos because he knew he was being out classed. What a PUNK! Great fight Carlos!! I hope Nick Diaz goes back to being a street fighting thug. UFC needs to know start DQing and taking away points for inactivity cause that was such a horrible match to watch.

I don’t really call "whipping" running away from Diaz every single round. The truth is (and every Boxing and MMA FAN knows it) is that UFC always too much inactivity and running away as "winning" you didn’t hurt him, you didn’t KO him, you didn’t get him to the ground…in fact you didn’t even engage the fight for more then 2 minutes combined. This my friends is not "whipping" this is laying/praying. If your the best, take him down, hurt him, KO him….sub him period. In Pride you can get DQed or have points taken way for not engaging in the fight. In Boxing you can get DQed and also have points taken away for inactivity…why is it that UFC has not done anything about this? Would you call Edgar better then BJ Penn despite Penn KOing and submitting so many more opponents? So if Edgar and Penn where in Pride….how does that sound now? Cause to me, it sounds like Edgar getting DQed for running away. I feel sorry for who ever paid to see that running fest live.

It was disrespectful when Anderson Silva did it to Maia and he should had got DQed or had points taken away for it. Its no different here. People paid to see a fight, not watch Nick punch, while Condit just ran away for 5 rounds. I don’t want to see UFC 112 like rounds ever again, and same goes for this.

it's called counter-punching and stick and move.

If Condit was running the whole time, why did Diaz get outstruck the whole fight? http://blog.fightmetric.com/2012/02/condit-vs-diaz-official-ufc-statistics.html

The stats show that Diaz was the inactive one in this fight. Just face it, Diaz is only effective against people that stand still in front of him. It’s like shooting – you might be decent at a gun range, but it’s a helluva lot harder to hit a moving target.

by matikal on Feb 5, 2012 2:49 AM EST up reply actions

How can you strike with someone that just running? He punched and just ran and never engaged. This is not something to say “great job” about. Dana got mad at Silva for doing the exact same thing and he said “if your so good then finish him”.

All condit and jackson showed is that there using the broken system of UFC to actually win. The best way to win, is to not fight at all and avoid any and all contact. Running=great fighter! LMFAO!

by EDMIX on Feb 5, 2012 2:54 AM EST up reply actions

Condit didn't "win" a MMA match, he just won a "UFC" match.

If it was Pride or Deep or Dream, he would had been DQed for inactivity. UFC seems to favor a whole lot of runners. If i paid to see that, i would be pissed. So i paid to watch you run and avoid Nick Diaz? So Nick came to fight and you came to run?

Your not better then Nick Diaz if you punched him in the face and then jumped a fence and ran off. Thats not “beating” or “winning” to me. UFC seems to think otherwise. KO or Submit him, then call yourself better. If they where in Pride, this would be a whole nother story would it not? A KO or Submission is a KO or Submission anywhere. Only in UFC is “running” and avoiding any type of engagement considered a “fight” or a “win”.

So how did Diaz win this fight in your opinion? He didn’t! And why didn’t you pay for the fight? Is it because you streamed it for free like a THUG!? lol

by Diaz is weak sauce! on Feb 5, 2012 2:52 AM EST reply actions

My thoughts exactly

If Condit didn’t win, Are you saying Diaz won the fight? If Diaz wanted to win so bad, then why didn’t he do anything about it? If Condit was circling away from him, he could’ve cut him off. But he didn’t, he just watched him circle away from him.

by matikal on Feb 5, 2012 2:57 AM EST up reply actions

No one “won” this fight in my eye. A winner to me is not what UFC says is one. If you KOed or submitted or beat up and took down a lot a person. Then i can say you won. But from what i saw, thats not what Condit was doing. he did none of those. Engagement should not be in favor for the person running. Its like me punching you in the face and getting in a car and driving of and then texting you that you didn’t win the fight and had you had been man enough you would had ran as fast as a car to catch up to me to win. LOL.

This is not a “winner” to me. KO him or Submit him then well see. This is nothing more then a technicality that UFC seems to like a whole lot despite it being very broken and disrespectful to the people who paid to see you fight.

The impossible happened: Diaz gassed

After the 2nd round, Diaz lost steam in the fight. Condit would have taken the 5th round, as well, if it wasn’t for the drag-down with a minute and a half left. Who would have thought that Diaz would be the one going for desperation takedowns in this fight? Yea, not anyone. Condit was the better fighter and, by far, the greater sportsman and more respectable person. He deserved the win. Congrats, Condit.

by DX OX on Feb 5, 2012 2:59 AM EST reply actions

Are you serious?

Diaz didn’t gas, he simply spent a large portion of the fight ineffectively walking Condit down. He didn’t cut off the cage enough and couldn’t sucker Condit into a brawl. That’s it.

Also

Everyone makes a big deal about Diaz’ conditioning but he’s lost more fights that have gone to the judges than he has won. He’s won 5 decisions and lost 6 decisions in his career. Does not sound like the most well-conditioned fighter in the world or else he would be winning more decisions.

by DX OX on Feb 5, 2012 5:07 AM EST up reply actions

Face it...

Gentlemen…since when, I ask, has it been an acceptable notion in the world of combat sports to win a title by a., retreated and b., striking DEFENSIVELY? That is, since when do we say “He won the fight,” when “he” never took hold of the fight? I imagine your answer, gentlemen, is never…but now I am confused—how is it then that we justify a Carlos Condit victory? My answer: we cannot.

Granted the fourth round was Condit’s, and in fact, was the most decisive round of the fight BUT, Nick won the first two rounds—with ring control/aggression—and sealed the 5th with the takedown and submission attempts. The third was a toss up and had it not been for Nick’s takedown the 5th, too, would have been a toss up. HOWEVER, Nick did take him down, he did take his back, and he did work for a couple submission attempts.

No questions asked, not even debatable, Nick Diaz won that fight 3 rounds to 2, at the very least. And for everyone who is so happy that he was robbed, it’s ok, really, it is. In fact, I’m sorry that you can’t find any reason to feel good about yourself, so you try and feel good about other people’s losses. Lastly, I wouldn’t blame Nick if he retired, the fight life is a grueling existence and to be cheated like that, like he was tonight, as he has been in the past, isn’t really worth

by just.a.thought on Feb 5, 2012 2:59 AM EST reply actions

by Diaz is weak sauce! on Feb 5, 2012 3:00 AM EST reply actions

I don’t care about who was “sportsmanlike” or not. This is once again not about character. And i agree with “Diaz is weak sauce” even with his bias and funny name. LOL. But i don’t think Diaz won, but i don’t think Condit deserves praise either. He won, because UFC has no system for non engagement like Pride, Deep and Dream have. If you get caught running away they will take away points 3 times and then just disqualify you.

Had this been used, i see Condit actually possibly KOing Diaz. I’m a fan a Diaz because of his KO’s, but if someone KO’s him! Thats something to really think about and be glad to see live….but that clearly not what happened tonight. I’m still a huge Shogun fan and now i’m a bigger Jones fan because of his KO of Shogun. Now if he just “ran” the whole time i wouldn’t say that. The BEST, means finishing in amazing fashion. What made this fight so hype was BOTH fighters have done this in the past. But tonight we get someone who wants to fight and someone who just wants to run to cheat a win with the UFC. Not a winner in my book. Thats really for any fighter who just wants to “lay and pray” “marathon it” “runner” etc. if it was any other fighter, believe me i would be saying the same thing. No one likes to see that crap.

Question

Don’t those Fight Metric stats just confirm what everyone is complaining about though? Because looking at those stats it seems the “baby leg kicks” were the difference in this fight.

I don’t take any issue with tonight’s main event decision, but I personally don’t want to see fights decided by leg kicks.

A leg kick is a strike. Strikes count.

And yes, they did make the difference in this close fight. I’m not saying condit smashed Diaz. It was a close fight. But Diaz just didn’t do enough to get the win. For all you Diaz fans, I understand you’re upset Diaz lost. But you don’t honestly think Diaz won the fight, do you? I mean, really?

Okay I think I get it

So you’re not saying that the fight itself is BS, really. You’re really talking about the scoring system used for MMA. I agree, the rules used in Pride were pretty good, where they dock points for inactivity or stalling. But I don’t think Pride rules would have made a difference in this fight. If you watched the Pride fights where they docked points for stalling/activity, the fighter was not landing any strikes, or even attempting to. In this Diaz/Condit fight, Condit employed a ‘hit-and’run’ strategy, like Machida. He was running yes, but he was striking first. He would not have been able to outstrike Diaz 151-105 if he didn’t. Condit would not have been docked points if they were using Pride rules. UFC Rules/Pride Rules = same result for this fight. So no, this fight was not BS.

by Diaz is weak sauce! on Feb 5, 2012 3:19 AM EST up reply actions

No one is actually saying Nick one there, there like most people should be, questioning why this is not “BS”. Which it is. So he got more leg kicks? Where are those stats on how much he ran away from Nick? Plan and simple, Condit can’t knockout Nick Diaz or Subit him, hes just going to hit him with baby hits and then run away to steal a “UFC” win. Again, this would not happen in Pride, Deep or Dream cause you would get DQed for actually just running away so much.

by EDMIX on Feb 5, 2012 3:23 AM EST up reply actions

Respect no matter what

HUGE fan of Nick. Kills me that he lost. Gotta say, I think Nate would’ve done a better job though. Nick needed more time to realize he needed to adjust (like he did during the last 40 seconds), and needs more time to adjust his UFC game overall. HE’S GOT THE POTENTIAL TO BEAT ALL COMERS. But, he has made it REAL clear over and over again, that he doesn’t like to fight, doesn’t like to hurt people, and doesn’t “like this shit” overall. And all the while, he still became GREAT at the game. War Diaz.
Carlos, well done. You played to the rules. Congrats. I’d much rather pay $50 to watch a street fight though. Have fun with GSP. This American hopes you can find some sneaky way to beat him too.

I thought the fight would be different

Maybe I had unrealistic hopes for this fight, but I was slightly disappointed. It was a “good” fight, but I thought it would be a barn burner for all 25 minutes. That’s probably because I didn’t expect Carlos to implement his (wise) gameplan.

Good job Carlos, but I think you’re in over your head now that you have to face GSP. But then again, I thought Diaz would win this one…..

by TomFop on Feb 5, 2012 3:23 AM EST reply actions

Its sad, but only the Pride, Pride K1, Deep, ShoBox and Dream MMA fans actually know how pussy that is.

Ask anyone in those organizations how there champions are made…not by running and non engagement, you get DQed for that there. UFC noobs just think running and marathons mean there “great fighters” and “layers and prayers” are “great” plans for a fight. Weird cause thats not what i would actually call a “fight” yet people are calling people who do this the best at it? Would he had won this if it was in Pride? LMFAO! I won cause i avoid actually fighting and abused the messed up system that UFC has. Greg Jackson is laughing very hard at you right now! LOL!

by EDMIX on Feb 5, 2012 3:31 AM EST reply actions

Just my opinion

I think the UFC needs to implement a scoring system that strikes a balance between allowing fighters to intelligently implement their gameplans and making sure that each bout delivers maximum entertainment value for the fans.

The rules as they are now strongly favor wrestlers and power athletes who like to coast to decision via “control”. What about the other 3 scoring criteria? EFFECTIVE striking, grappling and aggression?

I’m sorry, but imo, taking someone down and holding them there, moving from full guard to half guard over and over is not EFFECTIVE grappling. Imo, throwing a strike or two every 20 seconds is not EFFECTIVE striking or octagon control.

I’m not referring to the Condit Diaz fight in that last sentence either, it’s a general statement.

Great Fight

I love toe to toe bang it out matches, was this one=No. Was it a great fight=Yes…If you are a true mma fan, then you know the beauty of mma… this is not boxing, where both fighters has to be excellent at the one thing..MMA gives choices..Example-If standing is not your strong point, go to the ground..Both of these fighters obvious wanted a stand up match…Condit didnt want to stand toe to toe with diaz because of 2 things,1 thats diaz game plan {in order to win, take your opponent out his game plan] 2, he didnt want to risk anything, now risk to all you kids is a small word, but you need to learn, it has a BIG meaning. Condit stuck to his gameplan, which was to never stand still, never give diaz an oppertunity, and counter his way into a win… was Condit running=No, HE DIDNT STAND STILL… He took control of this fight and made it his….Yall shouldnt get mad at condit, for not standing still, should get mad at diaz for not adapting….Last,.. if you only like toe to toe slugfest, get off of an mma site, we make all own choices, theres many ways of winning, at the same time being dominate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know the strike counts, but I would say leg kicks where the difference.

Idiots that think Diaz won have no idea about the sport of boxing nor MMA. When you have an opponent in front of you, you try to exploit their weaknesses. Diaz is a better boxer so why would Condit stand and box with Diaz. Why didn’t Randy Couture stand and box with James Toney? Why didn’t Cotto brawl with Margarito?

Good Riddance

First of all great job by Carlos counter-attacking and actually landing more punches than Diaz. Condit won fair and square and actually put some thought into his gameplan. The UFC is much better without the extremely overrated Diaz brothers. Nick is 7-5 against UFC competition…what’s his claim to fame, defeating an aging and obviously worn out BJ Penn? I can’t even remember the last time brother Nate actually performed well in the octagon. "FIIIIIIIIIGHT WEEK" ... Not kick and run week.

Two different topics …
- I’m not saying Diaz won. I wish he did. But he clearly lost. I watched the fight this morning again – and Condit clearly won; he made the UFC rules work to his advantage is how he did it though.
- But I sure as hell don’t want to pay money to see THAT kind of “match”. I want to see a FIGHT, and that is what The Diaz Brothers ALWAYS bring. No matter what anybody coaches them to do otherwise, they are ALWAYS going to get up in your face and push to take you out. They don’t kick and then – run away fast.
I’d rather see a champion based on his “FIGHT”, not his David and Goliath strategy’s.
Look at ALL the past MMA fights (UFC or other), and tell me which ones were more exciting – AND which ones you had the most RESPECT for? I do like a good technical BJJ-type match, but the LAST thing I want to see and pay for is a boxing match. Does Nick like boxing? Hell yes, but he isn’t a boxer; HE IS A FIGHTER\BRAWLER. And that’s why I believe Nick won that fight. He didn’t look for ways TO AVOID HIS OPPONENT. Condit ADMITTED HE AND HIS COACHES DID JUST THAT.

GSP admittedly is annoyed with himself at how he can’t close fights lately. Well maybe that’s because you spend too much time wrestling around, and can’t hit hard enough. I wish Mr. Condit, of the USA!, the best.

Now HOW ABOUT A HARDY\DIAZ MATCHUP! Those boys like to WAR!

by MXJaxson on Feb 5, 2012 1:35 PM EST reply actions

MMA Fans have short memory

First off I am going to start with that Condit deserves the win but not like what most people are saying.
I had Diaz winning the first two rounds 10-9 and Condit clearly had rounds 3 and 4, 10-9. The deciding round was the last round. Condit for the most part kept to his game plan but felt once Diaz got him to the ground and started his submission attempts and controlling the last two minutes of the fifth he could have won. I felt at most it should have been a split decision.

Personally the judging is flawed and they try to make it up by goofing again.
Was it not last week that Chael Sonnen won a fight that the MMA community as a whole including Dana White believed Michael Bisping won?
I don’t want to cry conspiracy but is it possible the judges may not be in favor of giving the fight to Diaz so the sport doesn’t appear to favor big money fights as to who actually deserves it?

Also this fight was reminiscent of the Machida v. Jackson fight. Anyone remember that one? No…. Really? Ok so let me remind you.

In the Machida/Jackson fight Jackson was stalking Machida and all Machida was doing was running away and counter punching and kicking whenever Jackson went in. Hmmm that game plan sounds really familiar. But yet Jackson walked away with a split decision victory. So I suppose history wasn’t so kind to do the opposite for Diaz.

So I might seem a little jaded. I’m a huge fan of both Diaz and Condit and either fighter winning would make me happy as I feel both can bring the title back to the USA. Sorry I’m a fan of GSP also but lets face it, we all love a hometown hero.

Congratulations Condit. I hope Diaz comes back and gets the fight that everyone wants to see. Here we saw Strikeforce v. WEC and this will actually unify all three titles to show who is the best.

Weird Result

This was a weird result imo.

If you were to judge the fight overall, forgetting about the point system, I would say that Condit won it. But under the current UFC point system, Diaz should have gotten the nod.

Diaz won rds 1 & 2. Condit won rd 3 and definitely rd 4.
Diaz secured the 5th round with the takedown and submission attempts.

Factor in that Diaz was pressing forward and had Octagon control, and tried to finish with submission attempts — Diaz definitely deserved to win under the current rules. He did enough to win 3 rounds and get the nod even though I feel overall Condit landed more and won the fight.

That’s the problem with the UFC judges — there’s just no consistency.

If that was GSP and he did exactly what Diaz did to Condit, GSP would have been awarded the decision 100% no doubt about it.
