UFC 144 Results: Ben Henderson Beats Frankie Edgar

The UFC lightweight title changed hands on Saturday night at UFC 144.

Feb 26, 2012 - The UFC has a new lightweight champion. Ben Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar by unanimous decision in the main event at UFC 144, taking the lightweight belt.

It was a tremendous performance by Henderson, who came in with a great game plan heavy on kicks to the body and executed that game plan well. Henderson showed he was bigger and stronger than Edgar and showed that he had more than enough gas to last 25 minutes with the champion.

Two judges scored it 49-46 and one scored it 48-47. And now the UFC belt is around Henderson's waist.

More Coverage: UFC 144 Results | Henderson vs. Edgar Live Blog

Things got interesting early as Edgar caught a Henderson kick and held him by one foot in a takedown attempt, only to have Henderson throw a head kick with his other foot. Henderson kept throwing kicks throughout the first round, and Edgar threw a few as well. Edgar also moved in and out with punches, but a Henderson punch gave Edgar a black eye. Edgar got the better of the brief grappling exchanges, but Henderson got the better of the striking.

More fast-paced striking exchanges ensued in the second round, with Edgar catching more Henderson kicks and Edgar also taking Henderson down a couple of times. Edgar's takedown late in the second round appeared to have Henderson in trouble, but Henderson completely changed things with an upkick to Edgar's nose, followed by a choke attempt. Henderson probably took the round because of what he did in the final seconds.

Henderson continued hurting Edgar with strikes in the third round, but Edgar wouldn't quit and kept on attacking, and he took Henderson down at the end of the round. Henderson probably won the third round, but it was close.

Midway through the fourth round Henderson had Edgar in his guard and attempted a guillotine choke, and although he wasn't able to finish it, Henderson controlled the fourth and appeared to be taking control of the fight.

In the fifth round Henderson hammered away at the bloodied and bruised face of Edgar, and although Edgar wouldn't quit, it was clear in the end who had won: Henderson fought like a champion.

Edgar is good but

until he moves to 45, he’s gonna keep getting in these decisions. I bet he finishes better at 45. In my opinion he lost the first fight with Gray and the first fight with BJ. Sooner or later somebody with good cardio would take him out

by Bigs- on Feb 26, 2012 1:26 AM EST reply actions

aldo would chush edgar at 145

he should stay at 155 for his own safety!

i dunno

he is taking big shots left and right

by badbettor on Feb 26, 2012 1:45 AM EST up reply actions

I think Edgar should skip 145 and go down to 135

That’s his best chance of winning a belt IMO

Honestly

I don’t see Edgar holding any belts in any weight class. It’s a miracle he won the 155 belt at all to bee honest.

Don’t get me wrong, Edgar is a good fighter, I just don’t think he’s great.

Could have easily been a draw

Bendo did most damage but Franky did out struck him, not a dominant win

rematch?

Sooooo…are they going to force ben to rematch Frankie the way they made Frankie rematch both BJ and Maynard? That was a close fight that if scored on the whole, be did more damage,,,,but round to round I saw frankie with 3 to 2. Kinda like the last Pacman Marquez fight

Edgar fought a guy in heavier weight class

Considering he fought a guy who showed up in a higher weight class Edgar did a great job. Henderson was just too big and strong. He could just shake off Edgar’s shots. If they had been in the same weight class during tonight’s fight it might have gone the way.

by rcjinvegas on Feb 26, 2012 1:33 AM EST reply actions

He should consider moving to feather weight

but it was his choice to fight at light weight, so you can’t just throw it out like that as if he fought against his will.

this kid is right all that punching on edgar messed up his hair, either way, if you watched the fight henderson killed edgar and if he had had another round he would have finished, and if you also Watched the Pettis vs Bendo fight you would know that Pettis had to do one of the most spectacular moves in mma to wrestle the belt away from Bendo, that fight was so close that Pettis had to do a Jackie Chan kick off the damned cage to beat Bendo so I see the rematch going to Bendo unless Pettis can kick him in the mouth while doing a back flip and singing the national anthem while dancing to sexy and you know it.

Hendo won he first 4 rounds!

All about DAMAGE and HENDO did the most.

Didnt even think it was that close, Edgar hung in there but the only thing suggesting it would be close was ROGAN.

HENDO easily won, to big and powerful for Edgar, Edgar is tough but too small.

SMOOTH VS SHOWTIME II PLEASE!!!

by JB13 on Feb 26, 2012 1:40 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

No, the only thing suggesting it was all Bendo was Rogan. WATCH the actual fight again, on mute, don’t stare at the blood that came from a broken nose of 1 kick in 1 round, and judge round by round. Edgar 3-2. Also, don’t play off like Edgar landed a lot, but they have no power. Those same punches look weak, but dropped Bendo & KO’d Maynard. Some people just don’t mark up easy- like BJ Penn

by sergiobenitez.88 on Feb 26, 2012 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

Cheers for the back up! Great Stat Sig Strikes!

And to Sergio, you think the blood influenced my opinion then no and your a retard. Just because i dont share your view dont try and denounce my knowledge of MMA by suggesting my judgement is affected by blood! And did you watch the fight? Nose was broken and split in the second. The first round could be the contentious round but other then that Hendo won 2,3 & 4. I never said Edgar had no power either, Hendo has a great chin, one that takes matrix like kicks, i think Hendo showed heaps of confidence in his chin espicially they way he was willing to trade despite Edgar holding his leg.

"If I can't be you, I will outscore you."

THANK YOU!!! Both fighters are great and I loved ALL FIVE ROUNDS. Edgar only seemed to be busier because he moves so well but Ben was more effective making the most of the strikes that landed. Seems like fighters are get into the mentality of, “If I can’t be you, I will outscore you.” (Uhhh… I thought I won, I mean, I had more takedowns. Uhhhh…) Yet, the stats for this fight speak for themselves.

http://hosteddb.fightmetric.com/fights/index/3725

Edgar doesn’t deserve a rematch like he got in his last two fights… he should just prove he deserves the WIN on the first match! Ben continues to evolve as a fighter. Even after Edgar kept grabbing Ben’s leg after his kicks landed didn’t stop him from throwing them.

by vickitorious on Feb 26, 2012 3:29 AM EST up reply actions

Agree!

I think most people agree Hendo won besides some haters. It was a great fight and I got the feeling Hendo trusted his chin. Cant wait for Showtime vs Smooth II!

Love Edgar’s heart but the kid lost this one.

Can’t wait to see both fight again.

Also i think Edgar vs Aldo not Hioki, Hioki is no where near the class of Aldo it would be a quick fight.

I dunno about MMA judges.

The judges are officially just as bad in MMA as in boxing. I am both an Edgar fan and Henderson fan so lets get that clear. The fight was a great fight regardless of who won or who lost as well. Looking at this fight though you need to decisively beat the champion to become the champion and that was not the case at all. If you looked at the fighters at the end of the fight it would have looked like Henderson won, but that damage on Frankie’s face came from a few well placed shots. Look at Frankie’s face at the end of all of his fights and he looks like he lost. He’s the new Bayonne bleeder except he’s from Toms River. I would really love to see the stats from that fight. Frankie landed more strikes, had more take downs, better movement, and more ground and pound when the fight went to the ground. Henderson’s shots were harder and he did have maybe one more submission attempt then Edgar ,but that is in my opinion not nearly enough to take the title away from Edgar. For some reason I feel like this title was robbed from Edgar. The kid has more heart than any fighter I have ever seen in my entire life and I feel honored to watch him fight. At the end of the day though this is the reason you can’t leave the fight in the hands of the judges. If your a Henderson fan you feel great! If your an Edgar fan you feel cheated! No matter we all saw a great fight and both men are the epitome of class.

where was the decisive victory?

I thought that it was customary to DECISIVELY defeat a Champion, in order to dethrone them. Ben Henderson did not, and no-one can say that he did. He’s a great fighter, but Edgar is tough as nails. Bendo has the tenacity to fight to the end, but lacks the finishing skills. I walked out on the last Edgar/Maynard, in the 4th, because I gave up on Edgar, and look what happened. That is very unlikely to ever be the case in Henderson’s future. He can maintain and ride a fight out to remain “comfortable”, but not overwhelm and surprise.

by AXESHUN on Feb 26, 2012 1:57 AM EST reply actions

ummm really!!?!?!?!??!

Ben bet Frankie down 10 times worse then when Frankie bet bj FACT!!!!!! (and re-watch the first fight with out the underdog factor Frankie lost that fight to) and Ben might not finish but when he fights someone he HURTS them and you can bet that they know they were in a fight the next day.

Forcing Frankie to move down

I have nothing but love for Smooth, but Frankie won that fight. Henderson had moments, but Edgar had the rounds. I think UFC wants Frankie to move down, they want him to face Aldo and until he agrees, he is going to get these decisions regardless of his performance. I am truly disgusted today. That decison, and Joe Rogan’s 5 round blatent slant for Henderson leading up to it, was tantamount to betrayal.

Have to watch it again

If you are saying Bendo won without a doubt, like he dominated or something, you need to watch that shit again… on mute, and stop staring at the blood from Edgar’s broken nose that came from 1 kick. It was a very close fight, but i think if you actually WATCH the fight itself- Edgar edges it 3-2. I’ll watch it again too tho, very close.

Here are the stats

http://hosteddb.fightmetric.com/fights/index/3725

Ben landed 100 out of 277, 264 shots were significant strike.
Frank landed 81 out of 204, 190 shots were significant strike.
Frank succeeded takedown 5 times and Ben succeeded 1 time.

Now what, Frank fanboys? hmm?

by Rotten Apple on Feb 26, 2012 2:05 AM EST reply actions

and Ben did 6 sub attempt, Frank none.

not to mention aggressiveness, octagon control, and actual damage done.
Nothing controversial here. Ben won smoothly.

by Rotten Apple on Feb 26, 2012 2:10 AM EST up reply actions

lol he gots it, but its 87 of 264 attempted significant strikes to Edgar’s 68 of 190

by sergiobenitez.88 on Feb 26, 2012 2:13 AM EST up reply actions

I could just ignore the stats and still say..

Bendo won! He was teh ONLY one to actually keep going for the finish. Frankie Was scared to commit (mind you i called this would happen months ago based on how Edgar likes to lay and pray) the dude loves doing this. Bendo on the other hand, when he fights….he fights to end it. This is what made his fights in the WEC “Hendo vs Petis anyone?” so damn amazing. BOTH there going at it to WIN. Edgar was just going at it to score, not committing and not submitting. He tried to “cheat” his way again, and was sorely mistaken. It was for HIM to KO Hendo at the end, he didn’t commit and he didn’t try to end it….just score. He even had hte nerve t o raise his hand in the air as if he won. Really? He lost unanimously not a single round went to him yet.

Now i say this as a MMA fan and a fan of game fighters. Had they had shown Edgar had striked MORE! I STILL would had said Hendo deserved to win. We want to see the BEST fighters and “laying and praying” “wasting and stealing round time fucking dancing and running” is not what i call fighting. What Henderson was doing was equlivant to running down the clock in BasketBall (they have the shot clock for a reason) and he seems to love trying to run that thing down and run away with a win cause he (striked more) never mind they didn’t hurt, never mind he wasn’t going for a KO, NEVER MIND HE NEVER COMMITTED. If i was a judge and i counted more strikes for Edgar…i would had still picked Hendo was winning that round. Winners don’t win by technicalities buddy.

Dethrone Rogan

I concur with the masses, who are disgusted with Joe Rogan and his slanted, pre-conceived fighter babble. He’s absolutely one-sided and completely detracts from the fight that we’re watching. I’d also like to add for Rotten Apple…smoothly, but not decisively (nor convincingly). Edgar should have, and could have made a better showing, but the respect was not shown to the one who has earned it who should still be the holder of the belt. I’ll watch it 100 times, and you won’t convince me that this was a just decision. Just so everyone knows, I was pulling for the upset, but this was not an upset. Just upsetting. Also figure percentages of your “significant strike” theories, and Edgars #‘s are better. Frankie bleeds, we all know that, so let’s all put a little less Rogan-istic emphasis on the early damage that was inflicted…

by AXESHUN on Feb 26, 2012 2:25 AM EST reply actions

haha

first, I don’t have anything against fighters, just fanboys
I mean, the man reason ppl backed Frank was “Oh, he LOOKS beaten but he landed more shot statistically!” well, guess what? Frank looks beaten AND he lost in stat too! and now you are bringing Rogan, which is completely separated matter from fight’s decision, to delude the subject. Frank lost fight clearly. Rogan’s matter has nothing to do with decision. Accept it.

by Rotten Apple on Feb 26, 2012 2:34 AM EST up reply actions

Also figure percentages of your "significant strike" theories, and Edgars #‘s are better....

…and so we should dismiss that Henderson still landed more? At least his percentages are lower in ‘significant strikes’ because he made more attempts; unlike Edgar who just appeared to strike more because he moved and danced inside the octagon. They both fight well – I’m not taking anything away from Edgar but Ben Henderson didn’t win this fight because he made the other guy bleed.

Ben won in my opinion

Bens shots were harder and more effective while frankies did little to no damage. Ben was never in no danger in all of frankies takedowns. Frankies was the one in danger with the up kick and the guillotine so I agree with the decision.

BENDO!

Im so happy this dude won! I’m so tired of Frankies marathon victory. I my eyes, Matt Hughes and GSP are hte ONLY people to ever really stop BJ Penn. So you ran from him? So you avoided fighting? How is that “beating” BJ Penn? Cause UFC said so? If it was in Pride, Deep, Dream etc, He would had got DQed for not actually engaging him. That shit doesn’t fly in Japan. If you run the clock, you get booed and you get yellow carded….thats it. Thus, Edgar would had to have koed, submitted or actually fought BJ for 5 rounds to win.

This dude deserves the belt and i had NO doubt in my mind that he would win. Not one. All you have to do is see 1 fight from him from WEC to know Edgar was going to lose. I believe the top 5 best in WEC can beat Edgar on any given day. The UFC need theses type of fighters. People who…well actually fight not “baby hit” or “score hit” or “lay and pray” “marathon” etc.

by EDMIX on Feb 26, 2012 4:24 AM EST reply actions

Ben won the fight.

If you look at the fight as not a fan, but a judge Ben won the fight. Yes Frankie had more Takedowns, but where the effective? NO! Who had the Effective Punches? Ben…Who had Ring Gen. ? Ben This was a fun fight to watch..but the right man won.

by NJ Big T on Feb 26, 2012 6:28 AM EST reply actions

Agreed. Looking at UFC’s broken system. Had Edgar won, too many people would had been just too pissed off. And to think. He was using this system SO MUCH to his advantage that he literally thought HE WON THE FIGHT UNANIMOUSLY! I had to laugh hard at that. I knew right when i heard every judge gave it to him, Bendo won.

To have a system so broken, that the fighter who clearly put the other fighter in zero damage, and never really put in near getting KO’ed, never got a close submission…REALLY thought he would win without fucking hurting his opponent? Its this MMA or touch’a’thon? People booed for a reason when Batter was on the ground and when Edgar was circling. Unlike the US, Japan actually knows MMA rules and knows this is to run the clock, people in Japan rarely boo…but when they do….they MEAN IT. Had this been Pride, Dream, K1, Deep etc. He would had got yellow carded and after 3 times, DQed. He tried to use the system to his advantage to win, but this is not “who’s the best using the brokenness of the UFC’s system” its the “whos the BEST FIGHTER IN THE WORLD ie SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY FUCKING FIGHTS” not whos “the best runner and avider of MMA”

by EDMIX on Feb 26, 2012 7:49 AM EST up reply actions

Not even competitive

You guys are smoking crack if you think Edgar won that fight. I am a HUGE Frankie Edgar fan, but I’m also a Henderson fan. I was pulling for Frankie that entire fight, but that wasn’t even competitive. Frankie threw and landed less strikes, his strikes were less effective, and he got run around the ring by Henderson. Frankie scored more takedowns (the one category he won), but he didn’t do any damage or threaten with submissions with those takedowns. Henderson got back up almost immediately each time. Frankie went to take his back on several occasions and didn’t have the strength to lock in the hooks or anything. He just couldn’t deal with the obvious strength advantage of Henderson.

You ran? You avoided? You put them at zero threat? But wait….you took them down and did nothing, but you should win? Why and how? This is the dumbass mindset that UFC has people thinking it. “i touched him so i should win, never mind he almost submitted me 3 times, nevermind how many times I was almost knocked out….i touched him so i won”

Edgar put Henderson in zero danger, I’ve seen what Henderson can take and i’l tell you, Edgar isn’t going to knock him out. Edgar can’t knockout a fly. See what Petis did to Henderson in WEC and notice as amazing as all the hits where…..he NEVER knocked Henderson out. Most of those move would knock out a lot of MMA fighters. Edgar is just out classed. I can’t wait for a Hendo vs Petis 2, theres are what fucking lightweights are made of, forget that lay and pray crap that Edgar and the runners are doing. Take a look that Hendo vs Petis 1 from WEC as a sneak peek into what there second fight might look like.

Can I get an Amen?

… crickets…

"Ultimately, martial art means honestly expressing yourself... it is easy for me to put on a show and be cocky, or I could show you some really fancy movement... But to express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself, and to express myself honestly... Now that, my friend, is very hard to do."

LMAO @ FRANKIE'S CORNER

and Frankie himself thinking that he won the fight because “he did enough to win”.

"Alistair Overeem is a Dutch kickboxer who looks like someone at Marvel comics drew a man genetically engineered to fuck your girlfriend."

Hendo/Bisping:
"He hit him so hard that even gravity got scared. Bisping hung in mid-air for a moment while gravity screamed at inertia, "Did you see that shit!?" Then, after a high five, the two universal forces quit screwing around and yanked Bisping's limp body onto the floor." - quotes by Seanbaby
