The final ratings are in and by virtually every measurement, UFC on Fox 5 was a big success. It didn't set the world on fire, of course, but it was good. Very good. And it's deserving of praise both in planning and execution by all the parties involved.
The question is where does everyone go from here? UFC on Fox 6 doesn't have the same type of ingredients to make itself a ratings success. It could still draw well at the gate and is an excellent card, but the lesson we have now in MMA television battles is that either fans perceive the event and fights as being big time bouts or they don't. And when they don't, they're gone.
There's also the issue of what's next for each fighter. Is B.J. Penn done? Will Rory MacDonald face Carlos Condit? Who should Matt Brown fight next? What about Mike Swick? Is Alexander Gustafsson really the top contender? Can anyone beat Ben Henderson?
Oh, and who can forget that this weekend is not one but two TUF finales? The first is the U.S. version, which takes place on Friday. The second is in Australia and features not much to write home about except a weird intriguing middleweight bout.
