<It does my heart good to hear the MMA writers and fans speaking realistically about Jones chances at HW. I have said for quite some time, he has the talent to take the HW title and even hold both titles simultaneously if he were allowed to do it.
The only point where I part company with the mainstream fans and media is that Jones needs to pack on a lot more weight to compete in the HW division. His athletic talent and over skills are enough to overcome the heavy hands of his HW counterparts. I know…I know…I am as delusional to most of the mainstream fans now – but no more so than the contrarians who picked Ali against monsters like Sonny Liston and George Foreman back in the day. The size difference between Ali and those fighters, were even more impressive than Jones against any HW on the scene right now. And the odds… well, Jones won’t be facing the overwhelming odds that Ali did against either Liston or Foreman. In fact, I’d be surprised if he would even be the underdog by fight time - even against Dos Santos.
Yet Ali came into both fights with effectives game plans which nullified the power of his opponents. With everything one can say about Jones impressive talents, his most overlooked talent is his fight preparation and plan.
In short, I wouldn’t expect him to cooperate with Cormier in a wrestling match any more than I would expect him to slug it out with Dos Santos or Overeem.
I would however, expect him to defeat any of them. Thats just goofy, I know.
But maybe not quite as goofy as Ali defeating Liston and Foreman.
