Joe Camporeale-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire
The list of Ultimate Fighter alumni who has gone on to win UFC championships is a short one. For now, it only holds three names: Matt Serra, Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans.
John Dodson will have a chance to become the fourth.
The dynamic flyweight will get his opportunity to fight for the flyweight title after knocking out Jussier Formiga in the second round of their UFC on FX 5 bout.
Dodson got the finish at 4:35 of the round.
The two engaged in a slow, drawn-out first as both seemed to be intent on finding the range. Formiga landed early and might have taken the round.
Dodson continued on with his methodical approach in the second, but changed the complexion of the bout three minutes into the round by dropping Formiga with a left. Perhaps wary of the Brazilian's ground game, Dodson didn't engage him there, and Formiga got back to his feet. About one minute later, Dodson crushed him with another left, and this time, he pounced, firing off a series of lefts. Formiga turned his back and took a few shots until the referee stepped in to stop it.
The win sets Dodson up for a date with newly minted UFC flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson.
"Well it's going to be the super-fastest fight you've ever seen," he said. "'Mighty Mouse is going to be just as fast. It's going to be like lighting. Please have it on DVR, rewind it and watch it in slow-motion."
As of now, there is no timeframe on that bout.
Dodson will bring a 14-5 record into the title match.
Meanwhile, Formiga, who was making his UFC debut, fell to 14-2.
