UFC on FX 5 live play-by-play

MMA Fighting has live play-by-play for UFC on FX 5. Tonight's event is headlined by a heavyweight fight between Travis Browne and Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva. UFC on FX 5 live blog: Browne vs. Silva

The main event of the evening at UFC on FX 5 is Travis Browne vs. Antonio Silva. This is a heavyweight fight, meaning neither competitor can be greater than 265 pounds (with a one pound allowance). This bout is scheduled for five, five-minute rounds. The referee in charge of the action is Herb Dean.

Round 1: Both fighters open orthodox and Browne misses right away with an overhand right as well as several other wild kicks. Silva lands an outside leg kick, but not with a ton of authority. Silva presses Browne into the fence, but eats a knee to the midsection in the process. Now the two are clinched along the fence jockeying for position and Browne nearly overhooks the cage to avoid a takedown. The UFC commentators note something appears awkward about Browne's left knee and he's off balance as he throws strikes. Browne eats a monster right hand from Silva and collapses. The Brazilian follows up and Herb Dean has no choice but to step in.

UFC on FX 5 live blog: Ellenberger vs. Hieron

The co-main event of the night for UFC on FX 5 is Jake Ellenberger vs. Jay Hieron. This is a welterweight bout, meaning 170 pounds. This bout is scheduled for three, five-minute rounds. This bout is also a rematch from a 2006 bout that took place in the IFL. Hieron won that bout via unanimous decision. The referee in charge of the action is Josh Rosenthal.

Round 1: Both fighters open orthodox. Hieron with a few inside leg kicks and then misses with a spinning back kick. Now a jab for Hieron. Ellenberger sneaks a left through as he moves in, but it didn't land significantly. Hard rear (right) uppercut from Ellenberger lands nicely and he's stalking Hieron now. Another spinning back kick from Hieron misses, but lands a glancing left hand. Hieron reaches for a single and Ellenberger balances off the other leg, separates and lands two hard punches. Ellenberger misses a few punches just before the end of the round.

Round 2: Outside leg kick from Ellenberger to start the second frame, but eats a left hook from Hieron in the process. Hieron turning it on a bit landing outside leg kicks and short jabs, but misses on a single leg attempt. Ellenberger ducks a hook from Hieron and lands a beautiful double leg. Hieron is bleeding, but manages to create space with his guard enough to stand. Hieron peppering Ellenberger with leg kicks throughout the round, but misses with a spinning backfist.

Round 3: Inadvertent groin shot temporarily halts the bout, but they resume fighting quickly. Hieron getting busy now throwing strike after strike. Ellenberger takes Hieron down, but Hieron gets right back to his feet. Hard outside leg kick now for Ellenberger, but Hieron is landing those more. The fighters trade leg kicks again. Knee tap from Ellenberger fails, but lands a knee on the clinch break. Wild hook just before the bell drops Hieron.

UFC on FX 5 live blog: Dodson vs. Formiga

The opening bout of the night for the FX broadcast of UFC on FX 5 is John Dodson vs. Jussier Formiga. This is a flyweight fight, meaning 125 pounds. The winner of this bout earns a title shot against champion Demetrious Johnson. This bout is scheduled for three, five-minute rounds. The referee in charge of the action is Daryl Guthmiller.

Round 1: Dodson opens southpaw, Formiga is orthodox. Through a minute of action neither fighter lands much as they look to establish timing and range. Dodson misses with a left and eats a small right from Fomiga. Formiga lands another counterpunch, but no one has landed with any authority yet. Dodson landed several nice body shots with a left straight. Formiga attempts a double and Dodson breaks it immediately. Right straight connects for Formiga. He attempts another double, but Dodson shrugs it off. Dodson catches a kick and tries his trademark sweep where he kicks out the posting leg, but he can't get it.

Round 2: Dodson whiffs with an overhand left and shrugs off a takedown from Formiga. Short outside leg kick from the mark for Dodson. Lots of missed punches from both fighters. Formiga attempts another double and can't get it, then eats an uppercut to the body for his efforts. Then out of nowhere a left hand drops Formiga. Dodson is hesitant to follow Formiga to the ground and eventually Formiga scrambles to his feet. Another left hand drops Formiga and Dodson pounces. Formiga goes bellydown and tries to cover up, but is doing nothing to stop Dodson. The referee is left with no choice but to step in.

The first fight of the night on the FX broadcast of UFC on FX 5 is Josh Neer vs. Justin Edwards. This is a welterweight fight, meaning 170 pounds. This bout is scheduled for three, five-minute rounds. The referee in charge of the action is Nick Gamst.

Round 1: Both fighters open orthodox. Edwards pressing for a takedown right away, but Neer stops it along the fence and now they're jockeying for position. Edwards jumps guillotine and is put to sleep within seconds. The referee wakes him up on his knees and that's all she wrote.
