Jacob Volkmann saw his win streak snapped last time out, but faced with the possibility of losing two in a row, Volkman produced possibly the best performance of his UFC career.
The Minnesota native overwhelmed Shane Roller, taking down the former NCAA wrestling All-American and eventually scoring a first-round submission win.
Volkmann finished the fight with a rear naked choke at 2:38 of the round.
"I submitted him. What else is there?" Volkmann said after the finish.
Volkmann has now won six of seven since moving down to lightweight, but this was his first stoppage during that time.
He led from start to finish, scoring with kicks and uppercuts early and then getting Roller to the ground before working to his back. Volkmann took a while to get the choke under Roller's chin but eventually got a full body triangle and then sunk in the choke for the finish.
Afterward, Volkmann, a staunch Republican, asked undecideds to vote for him in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
"All the guys who don't want to vote for Obama, but also don't want to vote for Romney, write my name in," he said, apparently not concerned about the Constitutional requirement that mandates the president to be at least 35 years old. Volkmann is 32.
At least he has a future in the octagon, as he improved to 15-3. Roller dropped to 11-8 with his fourth loss in his last five fights.
