UFC 133 Live Blog: Chad Mendes vs. Rani Yahya Updates

Chad Mendes pounds Rani Yahya at UFC 133.PHILADELPHIA -- This is the UFC 133 live blog for Chad Mendes vs. Rani Yahya, a featherweight bout on tonight's Spike TV portion of the card from the Wells Fargo Center.

Mendes (10-0), who won his UFC debut by beating Michihiro Omigawa in February, will need to win this fight to stay in the title mix. Yahya (16-6) made his UFC debut in January and defeated Mike Brown via unanimous decision.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: Slow start to this one as the two measure each other. A Mendes kick lands low and we have an early timeout. Yahya is the one setting the pace early, although it's a slow pace. Both very measured early. Yahya shoots in midway through the round and Mendes easily sidesteps him. Mendes gains some confidence from that and takes the center of the cage. Mendes content to stay on the outside though. Yahya tries a spinning back kick that misses. We're under a minute left. Mendes rocks Yahya with a right. Moments later, a left hook to the body. Mendes finding his stride as the round nears an end. Not an action-filled round. Mendes 10-9.

Round 2: Mendes with a big takedown to start the round. He lets Yahya right back to his feet though. Perhaps just sending a message. Mendes shoots another takedown a minute later. Yahya briefly tries a guillotine but quickly surrenders the hold. Mendes again lets him up. He didn't even try a strike on the ground. Yahya throws wildy from the break. Mendes avoids everything, as well as a subsequent takedown try. Sharp right hand from Mendes finds its mark. The crowd is not blown away by this though. The pace is slow and both men are a bit defensive at times. Not to mention they've seen four decisions in a row before this one. Yahya's offense can't find a home despite some late aggression. It's Mendes again, 10-9.

Round 3: Yahya runs straight at Mendes out of the break and Mendes ducks into a takedown. This time Mendes looks for some offense while Yahya tries to reverse. Mendes keeps a solid base but there's not a lot of openings, and Yahya's dangerous guard slows him down further. Mendes finally pulls out and gets to his feet. Moments later, another Mendes takedown. It's another ground stalemate. Mendes was hoping to win a title shot off this win. This may not do it for him. Yahya lands his best strike of the fight with 30 seconds to go. Mendes responds with another takedown. It's Mendes again 10-9, though not the bigtime performance he needed.

Winner: Chad Mendes via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Afterward, Mendes says he may have broken his hand in the fight.
