UFC 125 is now official for Jan. 1, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard, Shane Carwin vs. Roy Nelson and Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi, says the UFC Ultimate Insider vodcast.
Brian Stann vs. Chris Leben and Dong-Hyun Kim vs. Nate Diaz are also expected for the main card, but have not yet been announced.
Edgar (13-1) defends his lightweight title against the only person to beat him in Maynard, whom Edgar suffered the unanimous decision loss to at UFC Fight Night 13 in April 2008. Edgar has since won five in a row with wins over former champions Sean Sherk and BJ Penn (twice). Maynard (10-0) finally earned a title shot this past August when he defeated Kenny Florian at UFC 118. Due to an lackluster win over Nate Diaz at UFC Fight Night 20, Maynard was passed over for a title shot earlier this year in favor of Edgar.
In July, Carwin (12-1) was moments away from capturing the UFC heavyweight belt from Brock Lesnar, but gassed by the second round and tapped to an arm-triangle choke. Carwin has kept quiet as of late after being linked to steroids. Nelson (15-5) is also coming off a big loss, dropping a decision in August to Junior dos Santos in a No. 1 contender bout.
Gomi and Guida both share a common most recent loss to Kenny Florian. Gomi (32-6) has since bounced back from a disappointing UFC debut in March with a beautiful knockout against Tyson Griffin in August. Meanwhile, Guida (27-11) has won both of his fights in 2010 against Shannon Gugerty and Rafael dos Anjos.
Tickets go on sale Oct. 23.
