Darren Elkins to Meet Edson Barboza at UFC 123

Lightweight Darren Elkins will meet UFC newcomer Edson Barboza at UFC 123 in Michigan, MMA Fighting learned Thursday.

Sources close to Elkins' camp confirmed that though bout agreements between the two fighters have not yet been signed, verbal agreements are in place.

Though not yet made official by the promotion, UFC 123 will take place Nov. 20 at The Palace in the northern Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills.

Elkins (11-2, 1-1 UFC), an Indiana state wrestling champion in high school, won his UFC debut at UFC Live on Versus 1 in March against Duane Ludwig when Ludwig's leg was broken on an Elkins takedown just 44 seconds into the first round. In his follow-up, against newcomer Charles Oliveira at UFC Live on Versus 2 last month, his wrestling background again scored him an early takedown – but right into an Oliveira triangle choke, which he used to transition to an armbar. Elkins tapped 41 seconds into the fight.

Barboza (6-0), a Brazilian known for his striking skills, has won all of his fights by stoppage, including five by KO or TKO. He most recently defeated Marcelo Giudici by leg kicks at a Ring of Combat event in Atlantic City.

UFC 123 is expected to feature a main event between former light heavyweight champions Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Lyoto Machida. Also notable will be the return of Karo Parisyan, as first reported by MMA Fighting, less than a year after UFC president Dana White said he would never fight for the promotion again. It will be the promotion's first visit to Michigan since UFC 9 in 1996.
