West, Makovsky, Gomez Advance in Bellator Bantamweight Tournament

Ed West, Zach Makovsky and Ulysses Gomez all won decisions Thursday night at Bellator 27 to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight tournament.

In the first fight of the televised card, West beat Bryan Goldsby by unanimous decision in a bout that will be remembered mostly for the fact that the fans at home couldn't watch it: For most of the fight the Fox Sports Net broadcast lost its video feed, and viewers saw only a graphic saying "Bellator 27 technical difficulties." The Fox Sports Net audio was still working, but the announcers didn't seem to realize that the viewers at home couldn't see the action, and therefore weren't as descriptive as they should have been.

Makovsky won his fight by controlling Nick Mamalis on the ground. He said afterward, "I realized I could really control the game if I was on top," and he was right about that. All three judges scored it 30-27 in Makovsky's favor.

Gomez beat Travis Reddinger by split decision in a fight that he controlled most of the way until late in the third round, when Reddinger had Gomez in serious trouble on the ground. Switching between a triangle choke and an arm bar, Reddinger nearly submitted Gomez, but Gomez managed to stay alive and finish the third round standing up. One judge scored it 29-28 for Reddinger, but the other two scored it 29-28 for Gomez.

West, Makovsky and Gomez will join Jose Vega, who won his first-round fight last week, in the bantamweight semifinals.
