James Toney Says He's Seen Fear in Couture's Eyes, Calls Lesnar 'Chicken'

BOSTON -- James Toney's greatest hits so far during UFC 118 fight week have come of the verbal variety.

But you have to hand it to Toney; while some fighters begin toning down the fireworks in the last days before the fight, he's still churning out the chatter

In the last 24 hours, Toney has taken shots at two of the UFC's most celebrated and popular stars, starting with his Saturday opponent, Randy Couture. When asked about his first staredown with Couture, which occurred during a photo opportunity on Wednesday, Toney fired away.

"I seen fear," he said. "I smelled it, too. Everybody could see it. People thought Randy was tough, Randy was cool. All of the Randy Couture fans were like, 'Ooh, ahh.' But get up close and personal and you would have seen fear in his eyes. He ain't never seen nobody like me before in his life."

Toney later admitted that he liked Couture, but that business was business.

"If Randy stands and trades, he's going to get knocked the f--- out, straight up, period," he said. "And you see in my other fights, if I don't knock you out, I f--- you up real bad."

Toney also took aim at Brock Lesnar, the UFC heavyweight champion who recently defended his belt with a second-round submission win over Shane Carwin.

In saying that he's picking Cain Velasquez to defeat Lesnar when the two face off later this year, Toney took a swipe at Lesnar.

"I'll tell you right now, Brock has no heart," he said. "Everybody seen what he did his last fight. He turned his back and ran like a chicken."

Toney was referring to a point in the bout when Carwin was blasting Lesnar in the standup, and Lesnar escaped the situation by retreating to the cage. Even though Lesnar came back in the fight to win, it doesn't impress the multi-time, multi-division boxing champion.

"Brock Lesnar is only the champion of the UFC. I'm the heavyweight champion of the world," he said.

Interestingly, Toney did find the time to compliment a vast portion of the MMA world: the fans. Despite the fact that most MMA fans are pulling for Couture in the fight, Toney said he admired their love of the sport.

"People say I hate MMA fans. I don't hate MMA fans," he said. "I think y'all have some of the best fans in the world. They're like soccer fans, crazy as f---. I love them. That's how it used to be in boxing. We need that back."
