Yasubey Enomoto promised some "ninja stuff" going into his bout with Kenta Takagi at Sengoku Raiden Championship 14 and he certainly delivered that.
In the second stanza of their Welterweight GP match, Enomoto threw a left straight at the same precise moment that Takagi attempted to deliver a spinning backfist. Seeing an opportunity, Enomoto converted the strike into a bulldog choke to instantly end the trash-talking Takagi's night.
"Of course, I've never practiced anything like that. I wanted to go for a rear-naked but when heard him making choking noises so I just went for the schoolyard choke. I wanted I knock him out. I don't like when people say stuff like 'I'm going to send him to hospital' and this kind of thing. That is not sport. When I got the choke I was thinking, 'Ah, should I let him go and try to knock him out?' but I decided not to."
With his impressive victory, Enomoto advances to the second round of the Welterweight GP where he will face Taisuke Okuno, who upset Nick Thompson with stunning KO.
Enomoto came into Sengoku almost completely unknown and faced a stiff test in his debut match with Sanae Kikuta. The Swiss native exceeded all expectations and dominated the Grabaka boss to get the first round knock out in a surprise upset.
"I had eight fights in Muay Thai and then I got a world championship but actually I think I am more of a ground guy."
Enomoto who trains with his brother Filipe, holds a purple belt in jiu-jitsu although he has not trained with a grappling coach in over four years. Despite his lack of instruction, Enomoto has picked up several European grappling titles.
"I don't know why, but everyone wants to stand with me. If he takes me down then I'll show my ground game but otherwise I'll show my stand-up."
Despite two fights on one of the biggest stages in MMA, Enomoto is still something of a mystery and claims that he is still holding back.
"If he wants to take me down I will try to sprawl but if I am on my back then I am in my world. I don't want to show people my world yet. I have some secrets. I love 'back-and-pound', not 'ground-and-pound' but 'back-and-pound'. After I win the title I'll bring out some DVDs showing my own style."
