Strikeforce Live Blog: King Mo Lawal vs. Rafael Cavalcante Updates

HOUSTON -- This is the Strikeforce: Houston live blog for Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal vs. Rafael Cavalcante, the main event of tonight's Strikeforce card on Showtime happening from the Toyota Center.

Lawal (7-0) defends his Strikeforce light heavyweight belt against the 9-2 Cavalcante.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: Feijao lunges in with a series of hooks, but Lawal has little trouble avoiding the opening salvo. Lawal presses forward with his own punching attack in close, pressing Feijao into the fence. Lawal scoops the Brazilian up high in the air for a slam that brings the crowd to its feet. Feijao is up quickly, and they move back to the center of the cage. Lawal darts in and then out after a four-punch combo. The champ has his hands low, threatening to change level on Feijao and staying out of punching range. Lawal moves into another clinch and tries to life Feijao for another slam, but can't finish it. A hard punch followed by a knee to the head from Feijao completes his best attack so far. Lawal misses with a left and then poses for the crowd. They don't seem as though they're appreciating it. Feijao stings Lawal with a leg kick in the final ten seconds, but doesn't follow up with anything. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Lawal.

Round 2: Another good leg kick from Feijao starts the round, flinging his lead leg out high. Feijao lands a hard right hand followed by a head kick that lands with a smack. Lawal seems unphased, coming right back with a takedown and working a bit of ground-and-pound. Back on the feet, Feijao extricates himself from the clinch with a nice spinning back elbow. Lawal fires off a few isolated left hands. Lawal clinches against the cage in the final thirty seconds, looking for a single-leg. He can't quite finish it, and settles for some knees to Feijao's thigh. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-10.

Round 3: A vicious right hand lands for Feijao and sends Lawal reeling backwards. Feijao follows up with another hard shot and then a knee to the head. Lawal answers with a right hand of his own off a jumping knee attempt from Feijao, but then the champ gets sucked into a striking exchange against the fence that doesn't favor him. Feijao hits him with another knee that forces him to back off, then follows with a left and a right that drops Lawal flat on his back. Lawal scrambles up looking for a takedown as Feijao hammerfists the side of his head. He's desperate for a takedown, but Feijao fights them off and continues the striking assault until Big John McCarthy moves in to stop it. Lawal falls flat on his face after the stoppage, which tells you it was probably justified.

Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante def. "King" Mo Lawal via TKO (strikes) at 1:14 of round three.

We have ourselves a new Strikeforce light heavyweight champ.
