Strikeforce Live Blog: Bobby Lashley vs. Chad Griggs Updates

HOUSTON -- This is the Strikeforce: Houston live blog for Bobby Lashley vs. Chad Griggs, a heavyweight bout on tonight's Strikeforce card on Showtime happening from the Toyota Center.

Former WWE Lashley continues his progression in MMA in a fight against full-time firefighter Griggs. Then afterwards, Lashley's next fight could be Dave Bautista.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: They touch gloves and face off in the center, and Lashley waits just a little more than ten seconds before getting the first takedown. The hulking pro wrestling vet moves to side control and peppers Griggs with some short right hands. Right away Griggs seems nowhere near as big or strong as Lashley. Lashley tries for mount, but can't get it. Griggs finally rolls out from under him midway through the round, but Lashley scoops him up and slams him back down about fifteen seconds later. Griggs gets up again and lands some knees to the body, but they stall in the clinch. After a restart Lashley goes right back to the double-leg and puts Griggs down again, but there's blood all over Griggs' chest. Lashley seems to be cut as the round draws to a close. At the bell, Lashley gets to his knees and looks a little flustered by a very deep cut under his left eye. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Lashley.

Round 2: Lashley wastes no time going for a takedown. Griggs stops the initial attempt, only to get slammed by the second effort from Lashley. Lashley's just barely working on the ground. It seems possible that all the energy he expended in the first, combined with the cut, has taken its toll. Lashley moves to mount and rains down a torrent of blows, but Griggs stays active and defends relatively well. He can't get Lashley off him, but the big man is only attacking in shorter and shorter bursts from the top, so Griggs is safe for now. The referee moves in to pause the fight with Lashley in mount. The crowd doesn't like the idea of a stand-up, but it looks as though he's stopping it to look at Lashley's cut. After concluding that it's not worth stopping the bout over, the ref restarts them on the feet for some reason. An exhausted Lashley shoots for a takedown, but Griggs defends and ends the round by pounding Lashley with hammer fists. Lashley isn't in any hurry to get up after the bell, and the ref waves it off. Chad Griggs has pulled off a tremendous upset.

Chad Griggs def. Bobby Lashley via ref. stoppage at the end of round two.
