In late March, former WEC light-heavyweight champion Brian Stann told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that he was strongly considering a drop to the UFC's middleweight division, and now we know it's definitely going to happen. Stann will join his new weight class on August 1, when he faces Mike Massenzio at UFC on Versus 2, sources close to the fight confirmed to MMA Fighting, following the fight's initial report from Heavy.com.
For the 27-year-old Massenzio (11-3 overall), it will be his first fight since Dec. 2008. He lost all of 2009 due to injuries that sidelined him for the year.
Massenzio is 1-1 in his UFC career, having beaten Drew McFedries in his promotional debut before falling to CB Dollaway via first-round TKO.
Stann, meanwhile, is 8-3 in his career after suffering a unanimous decision loss to rising star Phil Davis during February's UFC 109. Before that, Stann had won two straight, with defeats of Steve Cantwell and Rodney Wallace.
UFC on Versus 2 has yet to be officially announced, but is likely to take place at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
