WEC 48: Anthony Pettis Beats Alex Karalexis

Stay connected for news and updates
Anthony Pettis showed off a great combination of stand-up striking and submission skills in a lightweight bout Saturday night at WEC 48, getting Alex Karalexis to tap out in the second round of their fight in Sacramento.

Pettis landed a kick to the face in the early going and landed several kicks to the legs as the first round wore on, employing his stand-up strategy perfectly as Karalexis had little answer. In the closing seconds of the first round Karalexis took Pettis down, but it was definitely Pettis's round.

In the second Karalexis took Pettis twice, but that turned out to be a mistake: After the second guard Pettis pulled Karalexis into his guard and then secured a triangle choke that forced Karalexis to tap.

"I'm definitely happy," Pettis said afterward. "Sacramento, I love fighting here."

Pettis improved his MMA record to 10-1 with the win. Karalexis, well known as one of the contenders on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, never had an answer for Pettis and drops to 10-5.
