Iowa Senate Passes Bill to Regulate Amateur MMA

Lawmakers unanimously passed a bill Tuesday that will regulate amateur mixed martial arts in Iowa.

Amateur MMA was previously allowed, but not regulated. Professional MMA, labeled "shootfighting," however, is regulated.

"I believe this regulation is long overdue from the reports we have received of the exploitation by some amateur promoters in the state of Iowa," Labor Commissioner Dave Neil told MMA Fighting.

Regulation allows for a safer environment for amateur fighters by having license and testing requirements as well as medical officials mandatory for all events.

"Currently there are no physicals by medical personnel, or blood tests for HIV or Hepatitis B and C, or medical personnel required at amateur events to treat injured fighters," Neil added.

Now that the bill has been passed by the senate, it goes to the House for consideration.
