I was just thinking that CBS and Strikeforce haven't done enough to promote Saturday night's Fabricio Werdum-Antonio Silva fight, so I searched YouTube to see if there was a promotional video I hadn't seen. Well, it turns out that there is -- but it was produced not by Strikeforce or CBS, but by Affliction, which is no longer promoting MMA but still sponsors Werdum and other fighters.
In the video, Werdum talks about his upcoming fight with Silva, but he doesn't say anything all that newsworty. Werdum is one of the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world, so it's no surprise that he says he wants to take the fight to the ground and win by submission.
What is surprising about the video is the nasty cut Werdum has over his eye. It's not clear when the video was shot, but I hope it wasn't recent: That's a cut that needs some time to heal.
In any event, I'm glad to see that Affliction is helping Werdum promote his fight. I think there's a pretty good chance we'll see the Werdum-Silva winner take on the Fedor Emelianenko-Brett Rogers winner some time in 2010, so any help that Affliction can give Strikeforce in hyping Werdum vs. Silva is a good thing.

Nice find.
I don't know what it is about MDS that rubs me the wrong way but he is the worst writer (MMA) on this site by far. I want to congratulate Mike and Ariel. Top notch guys. Ray has been a blessing in disguise. He is so good too. MDS is all about Fedor and UFC bashing. I respect the man for what he has achieved, having a job with AOL and all, but come on man.
Antonio Silva is a duper. He cheated. He is not a fighter (according to Bus Rutten). Just like Barnett. And how about Mr. Werdum. He could last a round with Dos Santos. He is way too overrated but I guess anything they can feed to Al Fedor.
This fight shouldn't even be televised for God's sake. A cheater, who got around the rules shamefully fighting a glorified tomato can.
I never thought Werdum had very good standup. Even going to back the Arlovski fight in the UFC (Werdum's debut) which was one of the most explosive first rounds ever turned into a boring fight because neither guy did anything. I think Werdum is a good fighter for sure but probably not a great fighter because of the limited standup. That fight against Cigano Dos Santos was pretty crazy ... never seen Werdum that big before, glad to see he looked in better shape in his SF debut.
The thing about Antonio Silva is the guy is so freaking huge and has good boxing and kicks but a world class ground game. I expect him to win this fight on the feet but if it goes to the ground I'd say Werdum has the advantage. The thing about Silva is that he gets so sloppy with his hands and head movement that he exposes that massive chin of his to counter hooks and straights. I'm just not sure if Werdum has any desire to stand at all.
I think this is a good fight. Both these guys are good fighters and they deserve to be televised. I'd like to see the winner of Rogers and Fedor fight Overeem (another suspected doper - he looks like he has been eating people he's so big) instead of the winner of this fight. The way I see it is that Silva served his suspension with the commission and now he is cleared to fight. Let it go.
As far as being critical of MDS ... get off his back dude. It's a blog and what he's doing isn't journalism it's punditry. He is making commentary not reporting news. If you don't like it then don't read it. He pretty much built this section of Fanhouse on his own (he was the only one on boxing & MMA fanhouse for a while) and because of him guys like Ariel Helwani were able to come along and be part of what MDS helped to build. Everyones biased in one way or another and to deny that is to deny us of being human. If you want straight news go to Hua's site mmafighting.com ... this is punditry and commentary not journalism.
Johnny. I know me and you haven't really agreed on anything, but I do give MDS a lot of credit for his work here. But some of his statements are just WAY over the top. I don't mind biased coverage. I listen to both Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann. Both very biased. But every-time I read an MDS piece, it always either bashing Brock or the UFC or heaping praise on Fedor. I get it. He is a big Fedor fan. You are too. But you don't have to repeat it everyday.
Now to the fight. I just don't like either of these guys against Fedor. Maybe Arlovski should get his rematch with Fedor if he beats the winner of this fight. Maybe if the UFC cuts Roy Nelson, StrikeForce can pick him up and give him a chance to redeem himself. He is not great but is decent.
Overeem won't fight in the U.S. I mean he is into beating up female reporters and breaking bicycles with his big hammer. The dude is crazy gone. He almost jumped out of the cage against Thompson. I think he is mentally in a Coma but of course a decent fighter.
Maybe Fedor should fight Tom Atencio now that he is suing him and Barnett (John Doe)
I'm really not even that big of a Fedor fan to be honest. Also, I've never seen MDS be all that critical or bashing of Lesnar. In fact, if you had come to this site a little over a year ago you'd see that MDS at the time didn't have Fedor as the best P4P king (he had Anderson Silva) so that really only happened after the Sylvia and Arlovski fights. I guess if you are anti-Fedor and you look at MDS's comments in a vacuum then it might look that way but it's really just his opinions. There really isn't anything controversial or overtly biased about them. The thing is he gets called out for being biased all the time. If he speaks his mind negatively about Fedor then he gets called biased and vice versa.
I think MDS gives a little to much weight to the UFC/WEC for his rankings, personally. He'll put Brian Bowles as a top 10 P4P fighter in the world after one win against Torres but Mousasi has beaten Kang, Manhoef, Souza & Sobral and has only just crept into the top 10 LHW discussion nevermind the top 10 P4P list.
I think you are just reading into what he is saying to much and since you look at it from a pro UFC, pro Lesnar and anti Fedor point of view it's going to multiply the degree of which you pecieve the information. If you hate Fedor, and someone says Fedor is the best P4P then your going to see that as heaping praise or being biased. If you hated Lesnar (which you don't as he is one of your favorites - from your comments) and MDS said Lesnar is the best HW in the world you'd see that as having a pro UFC bias and an ulterior motive when in reality it's just his opinion.
Nothing makes his, your or my opinions more correct ... they all just belong to us and he is a fan of MMA like anyone else so he is going to have his own personal and unique perspective on the situation.
Ariel think that Fedor is the best P4P and the best fighter in the sports history as well but you don't hold it against him the same way you do with MDS. So, your going to see bias where you have a disagreement with him.
Punditry/Commentary is not the same as being biased or having an agenda. It's a simple yet important distinction to make. That'd be like calling Sean Hannity a news anchor ... he's not he is a commentator. He's obviously biased and comes from a neo-conservative point of view but those are still his opinions. If you listen to him (I don't) you know you aren't getting a fair minded person much the same as Olberman or Limbaugh.
I listen to a guy named Alex Jones ... he's the best. I don't agree with him on everything but most of his views parallel mine.
Johnny - "He'll put Brian Bowles as a top 10 P4P fighter in the world after one win against Torres but Mousasi has beaten Kang, Manhoef, Souza & Sobral..."
In MDS's defense, Bowles beat the #1 fighter in the world in his weight division by KO. Mousasi has yet to beat guys who are at the top of his division. Personally I think Mousasi is top 3 in the world at 205, but he hasn't quite proven it against elite competition. Sokoudjou isn't elite competition either IMO.
