Speaking with reporters in Japan prior to his K-1 kickboxing fight on Saturday, Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem said that he expects to defend his title against Fedor Emelianenko some time in 2010.
"This year is the K-1 year and then after this I am world heavyweight champion in America of Strikeforce, which is a pretty big promotion," Overeem said (at the 6:30 mark of the video above). "Fedor Emelianenko signed with them two months ago and I'm hoping to fight him next year in America."
Overeem became the heavyweight champion of Strikeforce in November of 2007 and hasn't fought for them since, raising questions about whether he ever intended to return to the promotion, or whether he'd simply continue to fight in Japan. But Overeem says fighting Fedor is what he wants to do next year.
In the mean time, Overeem has a big kickboxing fight against Peter Aerts in the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 Final 16. That fight will be shown live on HDNet early Saturday morning.

Makes you wonder if he doesnt fight in the US cause he does Steroids.......
yea he probably needs time to clean out his system
this is exactly what happens when you sign fighters to contracts that allow them to do whatever the hell they want.
just like any other sport, atheletes are selfish....not that i blame them.
it's just that, if your stupid enough to let them be that way then you reap what you sow.
and when i say selfish, i also mean they really don't give a rats ass about the fans.
so when you hear any athelete that says "he cares about the fans" or that, "he does what he does for the fans"...he is lying.
atheletes do what they do for one and only one reason....so they don't have to work a real job.
additionally, when a fighter says, "i'm hoping to" or "i intend to" those are code phrases for bullsh!t.
exactly the same words cung le was using 3 months ago. that's why i knew then, what we all know now...that he was/is just trying to manipulate his image. again, not that i blame him. because that is what celebrity's do.
read their words carefully and see through the lies.
aahh grasshopper...this will allow you to jump on a lilly, that is not a frog.
which also reminds me.
a recommendation to anyone that is into
martial arts or spirituality or likes wisedom type movies, or anyone that liked the kung fu series.
if you already haven't, then, check out the movie
circle of iron.
it was co-written by bruce lee.
it's the "blade runner" of martial arts movies.
however, don't expect glitz, this was a very low budget indy movie.
i dont think it will be long after the fedor fight he's back in k1.
fedor, first rd. ko.
ya great comment Neozoo i agree 100000%, makes me realize now tthat UFCs contracts are the way they are for this exact reason
Strikeforce and K-1(DREAM) have a partnership, so, they do this in the beginning to sort everything out, which sucks, but we get a whole bunch of great match ups in return. Next year should be huge for them.
Strikeforce "Titles" are a joke. Their "champions" never defend their titles. How can a serious MMA fan get excited about who is the champ when chances are they will never fight again for the organization?
That is what is so sweet about the UFC. Their champs defend their titles on a regular basis!!!
How cool would it be if the NFL was set up so that the Superbowl couldn't be played again until the prior year's championship team decided to play again, and then the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to take the next 2 years off? Hopefully, this ridiculous example helps to show why talking about Strikeforce titles is a stupid waste of time.
