UFC Fight Night 19: Nate Diaz Submits Melvin Guillard

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Nate Diaz snapped a two-fight losing streak inside the Octagon Wednesday at UFC Fight Night 19, beating Melvin Guillard with a second-round guillotine choke in the main event of a solid night of MMA.

Guillard dropped Diaz with a brutal right hand just seconds into the fight, but he didn't want to go to the ground with Diaz, a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, and so he allowed Diaz to recover and stand back up.

Less than a minute later, Diaz landed a double-leg takedown and got the fight where he wanted it, on the ground. From there it was a back-and-forth first round, with both fighters landing some strikes and Guillard opening up a nasty cut over Diaz's right eye.

But in the second, Diaz got Guillard on the ground when Guillard went for a takedown, pulled him right into a guillotine and forced Guillard to tap the mat, stopping the fight. With the loss, Guillard fell to 22-8-2 in his MMA career, and submission defense remains his weakness: seven of his eight losses have come by submission.

For Diaz, the win improves his record to 11-4 and keeps him relevant in the lightweight division. There are now a lot of interesting fights for Diaz, including possibly a rematch with Gray Maynard, who defeated Roger Huerta in the night's co-main event. Maynard has no official losses on his record, but he did lose to Diaz when they were both Ultimate Fighter contestants, and a Diaz-Huerta rematch would be a big fight.

The UFC Fight Night was a big night of fights. The Spike TV card got started with Nate Quarry beating Tim Credeur in a thrilling back-and-forth battle, and continued with Carlos Condit earning a come-from-behind victory over Jake Ellenberger. For the UFC, which has been on a roll with a series of great events, Fight Night 19 was an entertaining show.
