The best fight of the night so far was the stand-up battle between 135-pounders Akitoshi Tamura and Manny Tapia. Tamura employed kicks effectively to eke out a very close unanimous decision win over Tapia, and after the fight I think both fighters would have to be considered among the top 10 or 15 bantamweights in the world.
Other results included bantamweight Rani Yahya needing less than a minute to submit Eddie Wineland, featherweight Wagnney Fabiano showing off solid stand-up skills in beating fellow Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt Fredson Paixao, and bantamweight Dominick Cruz beating Ivan Lopez by unanimous decision.
Because the UFC doesn't have featherweights bantamweights, those classes have been overlooked by many MMA fans. But WEC 40, which might be the best bantamweight card ever, is showing just how much depth there is at 135 and 145 pounds.
Here are the undercard results:
Rafael Dias beat Mike Budnik by unanimous decision
Akitoshi Tamura beat Manny Tapia by unanimous decision
Rani Yahya beat Eddie Wineland by first-round submission (rear-naked choke)
Wagnney Fabiano beat Fredson Paxiao by unanimous decision
Dominick Cruz beat Ivan Lopez by unanimous decision
Anthony Njokuani beat Bart Palaszewski by second-round TKO (strikes)
The televised portion of the show begins at 9 PM ET on Versus.
