The Ultimate Fighting Championship has a new heavyweight superstar, and his name is Shane Carwin. Carwin knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga in the first round of their fight at UFC 96, firmly establishing himself as one of the elite heavyweights in MMA. Carwin landed a left jab and then a short right hand directly to Gonzaga's chin, and Gonzaga was out cold. It improved Carwin's record to an incredible 11-0, with all 11 wins coming in the first round.
Gonzaga was by far the toughest opponent Carwin had ever faced, and early on it looked like he was in trouble. Gonzaga connected with a big punch and took Carwin to the ground, where it appeared that Gonzaga could use his superior Brazilian jiu jitsu skills to win by submission.
But Carwin managed to work his way free and get back to his feet, and when he did, he landed that brutal 1-2 combination that sent Gonzaga crumpling to the canvas. The whole fight landed just 69 seconds.
Carwin will now be recognized as one of the Top 10 heavyweights in MMA, and there's a good chance that he could get a title shot later this year. This guy is for real.
