Mike Brown's first title defense as the World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion was a successful one, as he defeated Leonard Garcia by first-round submission and retained his title Sunday night at WEC 39.
Brown floored Garcia with a brutal right hand just seconds into the first round, and Garcia was never able to recover. Brown pounced and dominated Garcia on the ground, and although Garcia showed a lot of heart just by staying in the fight, he had no chance: Brown eventually got Garcia to tap with an arm triangle choke at 1:57 of the first round.
Brown improves his professional MMA record to 21-4, with 12 wins by submission and four by KO/TKO. Garcia falls to 12-4, and this is the first time anyone has stopped him.
So Brown keeps his title belt, but it doesn't get any easier: Up next for Brown will be a rematch with former featherweight champion Urijah Faber, whom Brown defeated by first-round TKO in November. The first time it was a major upset when Brown beat Faber, but next time we know going into the fight that it's going to be a war. Brown and Faber are the two best 145-pound fighters in the world.
