Jan 5, 2009 - In this video, Wolfslair MMA Academy boss Anthony McGann has a lot of things to say about England's leading mixed martial arts gym, but the most interesting part is about performance-enhancing drugs:
"Steroids in the sport, we go one step beyond in the Wolfslair," McGann said. "Pre-fight, our guys, we in-house test. Not for the fact that we think they're using or whatever, just for our own reputation with the UFC. We never want to get tarred with that brush. So we do a lot of in-house testing on ourselves. Out there people do it. You do it you're going to get caught. The Nevada State Commission is very good at this now."
In general, drug testing in sports is the exclusive domain of the leagues and governing bodies. It's rare for a gym to test its own athletes, but Wolfslair (which trains, among others, Michael Bisping, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Cheick Kongo) is going an extra mile to maintain a squeaky-clean image.
And as for Bisping's last opponent, Chris Leben, who tested positve after their fight? "Chris Leben, whether he was on steroids or whether he wasn't on steroids, he got his ass kicked."
