Takanori Gomi wins gold in Combat Wrestling

Sengoku lightweight Takanori Gomi won the Gold medal in the 73-kg weight division Sunday at the All-Japan Combat Wrestling Tournament at the Kokushikan University in Tokyo, Japan.

In the final, Gomi defeated DREAM lightweight Katsuhiko Nagata -- the 2000 Olympic silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling -- via decision (1-0).

Gomi, who said he hasn't competed in grappling tournaments in a while, wrote on his blog after that facing Nagata in the final was an eye-opening experience.

"[Nagata] made me realize that I still had a lot to improve in my grappling techniques," Gomi said.

Gomi's next MMA fight will be against Satoru Kitaoka for the Sengoku lightweight belt on Jan. 4, 2009.
