I didn't like what I saw when I watched Kim Couture earn a first-round TKO over Lina Kvokov in Friday night's Strikeforce show. Couture isn't a first-rate fighter like Tara Larosa or Cris Cyborg or Gina Carano, but she regularly trains with some of the best in the world, and Kvokov looked woefully unprepared to fight someone like Couture. So I'm glad to see that Couture herself says she didn't much like that fight, either.
On the Xtreme Couture blog, Kim Couture says she'd love to fight for Strikeforce again, but that she hopes she gets some opponents who don't turn their backs in the middle of the fight.
Couture says:
"I trained hard and really wanted to show the MMA fans a good show and let them know I was a 100% and ready to fight, I have the utmost respect for anyone who steps into the cage but felt disappointed that she just wouldn't engage with me and turned her back on me. I was just dumbfounded. ...I've seen some people trying to spin that fight as a great achievement for Couture, but I'm glad Couture herself acknowledges that she won an easy fight against an overmatched opponent. I hope we don't see that again.
"Lina just looked nervous from the moment she tripped coming out to the cage, she just looked like she didn't want to fight that night."
Of course, there's also a danger of taking this too far in the opposite direction: Because she's married to Randy Couture, Kim Couture will always be one of the best known women in MMA, and I wouldn't want to see anyone put her in the cage with someone like Larosa just because of her surname.
The good news is that Couture-Kvokov aside, Strikeforce is a well-run organization. I expect it to find a suitable opponent for Couture next time around.
