Fabricio Werdum turned down UFC pay cut request

Nov 25, 2008 - Top-ten heavyweight Fabricio Werdum may have avoided release from the UFC earlier this month if he had agreed to taking a major pay cut.

"I had four more fights left with them on my contract, which ran to 2010," Werdum told Tatame.com. "But they demanded to renegotiate my existing contract by cutting my pay in half."

The UFC terminated Werdum's promotional contract for losing on Oct. 25 at UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote to Junior Dos Santos.

"Nothing bad with Werdum," White said on the Nov. 13 edition of "MMA Live" on ESPN.com. "He got knocked out by a guy that wasn't ranked and that nobodies ever heard of. It was his first time in the UFC and Werdum got knocked out in the first round."

Prior to the loss at UFC 90, Werdum (11-4-1) recorded TKO wins over Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga. Werdum was the 2007 ADCC world heavyweight champion and is considered to be one of the top ten heavyweights in the world.

Werdum, still on MMAFighting.com's top ten heavyweights list, told Tatame that he is leaning towards Affliction due to the level of heavyweights the promotion has assembled.

"There are several possibilities now including fighting in multiple organizations," Werdum said. "Affliction, Sengoku and Dream are big events, but I think the possibility of fighting for Affliction in particular will give me the best chance to fight the best in the world."
