The hype for UFC 94 is heating up, with Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn making an appearance today in Toronto to promote their January 31 title fight:
UFC President Dana White has long said that Anderson Silva is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but he left open the possibility that the winner of the UFC 94 main event could earn that mythical title.
"These two guys are in their prime, they're both incredible, amazing fighters. There's all this talk right now about pound-for-pound best in the world. Anderson Silva has it right now, I think the winner that walks out of this fight with his hand raised is going to be a superstar and is the running to be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world."
Silva is my own choice for the best pound-for-pound fighter, but after Silva's somewhat lackluster performance against Patrick Cote at UFC 90, I think the St. Pierre-Penn winner will be able to make a good case. (I also think Fedor Emelianenko has a good case and can bolster that case with an impressive win over Andrei Arlovski on January 24.)
White also said, "If Georges St. Pierre wins this fight, he'll get Anderson Silva." Although that would be a great fight, I agree with Ariel Helwani of MMA Rated that there are still plenty of good match-ups for St. Pierre at 170 pounds. He doesn't need to move up in weight any time soon.
